I made the transition but boy this is tough

I just started using Final Cup Pro 7(never used any version before), and I've read up as much as I could on it and also watch some tutorials. I know the basics as far as editing, exporting to compression and then to DVD Studio. But man, this Final Cut platform is some advanced stuff, I know its gonna take some time to fully learn it and I plan on dedicating that time to it.

One problem I’m having is the quality of my footage that I capture. For some reason the quality downgrades significantly when I capture from my minidv tape to the final cut timeline. The video looks fine on the preview capture screen when I play the clips through my firewire. But then when I capture the footage and bring it to the timeline, it looks bad quality wise.

I shot using the DVX100a in 24pA. I read all the tutorials on how to catch 24pA in Final Cut and I followed all the instructions. The footage plays fine, it’s just the picture quality is bad. When I preview my original footage before capturing into Final Cut, the footage looks nice and crisp, but once entered into Final Cut, it looks grainy and of low quality. It seems like its going through some kind of compression before it goes into final cut. I tried different settings just to play around and they all looked the same, even the uncompress settings.

For the record my Easy Settings are: NTSC, DV-NTSC 24p and I made sure to select the separate 29fps which is on the right. My capture settings is: DV NTSC 48 Khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown removal.

Like I said everything plays fine with no blurs, it’s just I lost major picture quality, I gotta be missing something, would appreciate any help, thanks.

Def. something going wrong. But its been such a long time since I cut anything dvx I couldnt offer anything without actually grabbing a camera and going through it step by step again.

Hopefully someone like Noah will come by shortly.

My guess is you have the playback quality set to a low setting. On the left hand side of the timeline window there will be a small oval box that says RT and a small arrow pointing down on it.

Click this box/button. Under the settings click the playback setting to Dynamic and the Frame Rate to Dynamic. This should fix that problem.

If you start to get drop frames as you work (would mean you have an older slower machine) start lowering the settings which makes playback easier on the machine.

I believe this will be the fix, if not if the image went in looking good there is bound to be a way to make it work better.

I also did a test and actually made a DVD of the footage and played it on my computer and I noticed the quality lost through the DVD, though I haven't yet mastered compression and I added no color correction so I didn't use the DVD as a major factor, but the fact that the quality is bad even before I did the compression to DVD is the reason why I'm thinking something is happening with the capture.

I will adjust the playback quality liked mentioned and see if that does anything.

This is what I hope to fix.

I changed the preview setting and it didn't work. While playing around with the clip in my browser window, I'm checking all the info and right under compressor it says DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, does it automatically give it that codec for compression while capturing? I never selected that. Just to make sure, I captured another clip making sure the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC was not selected and it showed it being the codec in the browser window again? Still playing around with it hopefully I can solve this.

Above is a screen shot of my screen to show what I'm talking about, not sure why its not displaying but if you right click it should display
