I love soundtracks... do you?

I'm finding myself leaning away from conventional music and more and more listening only to soundtrack music. If it's conventional music, it really has to evoke a lot of emotion, like Evanescence or Muse. But I'll just pop in the soundtrack of a movie and listen to that. Usually orchestra soundtracks.

I find it really helps to write as well.

Is anyone else like that?

If so, what soundtracks do you really enjoy? Right now mine has to be the soundtrack from The Fountain.

I really like orchestra music and soundtracks also.

The Fountain has a few good songs but is a little too repetitive for me. It works great for the movie though.

I like tons of soundtracks: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dances with Wolves... actually there's another thread on this and I'm sure I typed up a list there. Once Upon a Time in America is also another favorite, despite it being incredibly repetitive throughout.

Three times I listen to music the most:

1. Playing Xbox
2. Working out
3. Working on graphics

For 1 & 3 I will listen to a mix of music and high-impact or techno soundtracks... often times the music has been used in part for some action movies and in a lot of times the trailers...

When I work out it's all metal :nads:

I too love listening to soundtracks, preferrably orchestral, but not exclusively. And when I write I like to listen to soundtracks that project a similar emotion to what I'm after with that particular script.

My latest favorite is The Great Debaters, the original score. They have a CD of songs used in the movie, which I also like, but the actual orchestral score is my favorite right now.

James Newton Howard (The Village, Lady In The Water, King Kong Treasure Planet, etc) is my favorite composer, but there are many other great composers and many wonderful soundtracks.

The Village score was lovely.

Grand Canyon is a really nice score by JN Howard. Unbreakable too.

Did you know he got started doing arrangements and session work with the guys from Toto!

I went through a huge Soundtrack buying phase, but I rarely find film music that inspires me these days. Perhaps because they are usually buried under aggressive sound design. Up until the mid/late 80's the score really drove the picture, especially in action/adventure films. Now, films are so noisy, a composer has to make something equally bombastic and cacphonous to compete. Whenever I write these days, for some reason I love listening to Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack, and I'm not really a Trek nerd. I also listen to a Bernard Hermann compilation I have. Needless to say I'm a fan of the old guys. Bernard Hermann, Max Steiner, Jerry Goldsmith, Early John Williams, Lalo Schifrin...sometimes James Horner, when he's not busy plagarizing himself. Newer guys I like are Patrick Doyle and Thomas Newman. Not a big fan of Hans Zimmer at all as his scores all run together, but his work on the Lion King was great.

Bernard Hermann's score in Taxi Driver was great. It fit the film quite well.

Alan Silvestri also did great work in Forest Gump and Castaway.

Yeah, forgot Silvestri. Has a tendency to get too gooey at times, but I guess the same could be said of Williams. My favorite of his is Back to the Future, followed by Predator, which is slightly tarnished by the fact that he himself plagarizes from it. And Bernard Hermann's greatest for me is North By Northwest, although he has a ton of great scores.

The soundtrack to "Amelie" is great and you should check out the music for the movie "Once". It's incredible. But you should probably see the movie first. lol

I to am a soundtrack fan. In fact I often remember the composers of a particular movie over the Director :S
