So I went to buy some DVD r's and DVD rw's today because they were on sale. When I got to the checkout I'm faced with a bill that's almost 25% more than the advertised sale price "why" says I. Well it turns out that we have to pay a 21% piracy tax on all recordable media. I fought like a Banshee...Why should I pay a tax when I'm using the product for backing up files and producing DVD's of my own work. I threatened to turn "Blue spider loose on them but to no avail. In the end I refused to pay and went down the road to futureshop who I'm told skirt the whole issue cos they are american. Now I'm wondering how much of this "piracy tax" gets filtered down to the artists it is supposedly collected for >:(

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Very good question but I know not the Answer :-/

The only store I've been to that charges it here is London Drugs. ???

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

It was London Drugs they claim it's the law and they have to abide with it. It seems every deal I have with this company causes me some grief. They claim other stores IE Futureshop don't charege the tax cos they are US firms.

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Wow, that is bizarre. A Piracy tax? Americans, years ago, dumped tea in the Boston harbor to protest similar unfair taxation . (It was a big party, everyone was there!) Canadians might have to do the same thing. But wait until the lakes unfreeze before dumping all those CD/DVD-Rs. ;)

Ohh how I miss cold winters. Any chance you could e-mail me a cold front? Thailand is HOT!!!

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

:D :D

The British Columbia CD-R party. (abbreviated as BCCDRP.)

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Knew it was London Drugs! - Don't buy media from them. I think they are the ONLY ones charging it AND they just raised it!

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

I also bought a digital cam from them which went down one week after purchase. I tried to return it for a refund but they wouldn't refund me because I didn't have the box. I fought with them and threatened the "Bluespider" but they wouldn't budge. So I had it repaired. In the meantime I returned the 128mb digital flash card purchased with the cam witch they did refund despite the fact that I didn't have the box. ???

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Man that sucks! You're guilty of piracy (paying a tax/fine) before being proved innocent?? I read somewhere that other businesses include the piracy tax in their price, but London Drugs does not, so that is why buyers have sticker shock at the counter. Are the prices the same at the 2 different shops (London Drugs and non-tax'd shops)?

No, Futureshop was actually cheaper!

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

What about other Canadian shops? I did some research and it says all Canadian shops selling media must charge it, although some hide the tax in the price and some show it on the receipt, but everyone ends up paying the same price. Futureshop is American, right?

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

....Do you all still pay a tribute to the Queen......If so this may be another impuesto to help with that expense.....???

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

London Drugs said futureshop was American.

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

I don't pay tribute to Queen, not since Freddy Mercury passed away

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Mino- why don't just go to another store and buy them. Don't you guys have like a wall wart? Best Buy? Fry's electronics? Hooters? I usually always buy my DVD-+Rs online. I can get like a 500 spindle for like 150 bucks.

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

I got em at stupidshop, a rack of 50 for $30.00 Canadian. Hooters were out of stock and we hates Walmart.

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

London Drugs is bullshitting you. There is no difference between Canadian, American, or any other national business. As long as you have a physical presence in Canada, you are obliged to collect Canadian taxes and levies. The problem is that by law, only the sales tax (GST, PST) need to be shown on the receipt. Futureshop probably hides this anti-piracy levy in the price, which might also be illegal because than you are paying tax on tax (GST+PST on top of the anti-piracy levy).

You can thank Sheila Copps and the liberal government for crap like this. They passed a law that hurts most the people that are supposed to be protected by it - independent artists and producers.

Jerry

P.S. I really don't understand most artists in this regard - I understand they are liberal by nature, but if you want to make a living as an artist, the further left your government is, the more it hurts you (taxes, regulations, bureaucracy). But most artists I know vote for Liberals and NDP. Go figure!

Re: I love my goverment(beeeaaatches)

Well, since you are paying extra to make "illegal" copies of things, that makes the illegality go away. Right?

Dan
