I hope you can help me. MKH416 or MKH50?

Many pro mixers including myself, find limited use for a long shotgun, though it's nice to have when needed. If one can only afford one or two mics, I would recommend: 1. a short shotgun. 2. a hyper cardioid for interiors. 3. additional funds would be wisly spent on lavs, unless for a series special application.

Long guns are maily used for sport - eg: the sound of a "bat" hitting a ball - lile: cricket, golf, tennis, etc. and other sports where you need to get sound from the touchline.

B&H are wrong.

For the 8060 with the standard MZX XLR module, Rycote recommend the Kit 3 - see HERE.

If you use the MZF filter with the standard MZX XLR module, it would still be a Kit 3 - see HERE.

You only need the Kit 4 if you have the MZD 8000 AES24 digital module - see HERE.

If you use the MZL remote cable, you can actually go very small and use a Kit 2 - see HERE.

To be really light and mobile, I would use the remote cable and go for a Kit 2, personally. But otherwise it's a Kit 3 unless you are going digital.

Rycote list all the part numbers on the links.

John

Thank you Mr. Willett -- so I take it that usually you do not think that the MZF filter is needed for outdoor boom work, even in a windy setting (if there is a possibility of needing this I would go with the kit 3 (which is the one I thought was actually correct, thank you for verifying)? EDIT: I found this, Rycote Windshield Kit #2-MZL which looks like it will adapt to the 8060 and allow the small kit 2, would this be the optimum configuration from your recommendation above? I assume that there is an external XLR connector that is used to attach to the distal portion of the boom pole?

I have followed your recommendations on other microphones from this forum and have been very happy, so I appreciate your help.

Also, if one was to use the kit 2 with the remote cable, how is that used with a boom pole (I thought that a boom pole which was pre-wired and you just needed to make connections at either end would be easier to manage)? I would say that the MZF *is* very useful to have as it gives you both a bass roll-off and a -10dB pad.

But it will still work in the Kit-3 with the XLR module or the Kit-2 with the remote cable.

Personally I don't like wired booms - but the Rycote special Kit-2 for the 8060 with remote can come with a special ConnBox that already has the remote cable wired to it and terminates with an XLR in the handle in the normal way.

This is the way I, personally, would go as it makes for a much smaller and lighter mic. rig on the boom pole.

Screw the MZF onto the 8060 and then screw all this onto the remote cable tail on the ConnBox in the specual Kit-2.

Give Rycote a call, they will give you chapter and verse on this.

All the best,

John

Hi

Finally, I'll buy a MKH 50, I have no money to buy the Rycote Full windshield

believes the Rycote (5cm) Large Hole Softie with Windjammer or Rycote Baby Ball Gag (25mm) with Windjammer would be nice?

Thanks.

A Softie is overkill for interiors, the BBG is nice, but in most interior scenes, a cheap foam windscreen is adequate.

I have been reading threads on the 8000 series and apparently there were a number of defective units with crackling noise appearing some time after purchase. This was about a year ago, is this all sorted out now?

My choice would be an S-series kit if you can't afford a full kit - the price is similar to a Softie kit.

Though I think I would go for a Baby Ball Gag and Windjammer with an InVision mount over a Softie kit.

My understanding is that it's all sorted now.
