I have a noob question about field monitors and DOF

I have a Xh-G1 and i am getting a Brevis adapter, i have rails with a shoulder mount, follow focus and matte box on the way. Ive pretty much spent all of my money i can on this. My question is do i need a HD LCD to shoot with or can i get away with a SD LCD? Im concerned about getting a clean focus, however HD monitors start at 800 i believe.

any help/advice would be great!

I've never shot with the GH...but I have used the A1:

Yes you need an external monitor. You simply can't have good focus without one. This can be as simple as a monitor from your local big box store, only you need to make sure you don't use a cheap monitor to approximate your colors...only use it for focus...

This all said, it's best to have a good small HD monitor.
 
If oyu dont need a "small" monitor you could always use a computer monitor that has an HDMI input (or even DVI input with an adapter) You can usually find them under $200
