Hi, I'd like to know your opinion: if you had a GH5 with a 12-60mm lens for video and would you like to buy another objective, which would you buy between these two lens?
Panasonic 45-175mm Vario X Motorized zoom Power O.I.S
Panasonic 14-140mm Power O.I.S
In your opinion which is more enjoyable and useful?

They are not comparable in quality.
I would recommend the 35-100mm, it's a fantastic lens.

I would stay Leica because lens character, aesthetics, and matching is important to me.

Leica does not have this yet, but if you can wait, at some point this year the Leica 50-200 f/2.8-4 is suppose to be released, and would be the perfect complement to your 12-60.

If you cannot wait, I might suggest buying a used lens temporarily, and then springing for the 50-200 when it launches later this year. Exact timeline is unknown. Could be NAB, could be fall.

I'm curious, what do you mean by "objective zoom"? I don't recall seeing that term before.

What would be an example of an "un-objective zoom"? Or, should I say, what would be an example of a "subjective zoom"? A wide zoom, maybe?

I would suspect a translation issue from another language into English.

Yes, I can wait for the Leica 50-200mm lens but I can't spend $2,998. ;) I make only videos and not photos.

>"I'm curious, what do you mean by "objective zoom"? I don't recall seeing that term before". ahahah, I'm sorry, with "Zoom" I mean a long extension of the lens.

There has been no pricing announced for the 50-200. The pricing you are seeing is for the currently available 200mm lens. The leica 100-400 for comparison is $1800, so not sure what to expect for the 50-200... maybe $2000?

Officially unannounced for $1700 and release in June. This is what I'd go for, if you can wait.

I just got this lens today and am unreasonably excited about it. It's very compact and well built. At 200mm (400mm equivalent) on GH5, the Dual IS is insane. I can literally just stand and handhold it, at full reach, without much effort, and the image is very stable. So close to looking like it's on a tripod, just a little bit of float. Great image quality as well. This is m43 format at its strongest... a handheld, fully stabilized, pocket sized 400mm equivalent lens. All weather sealed.

Yes...I bought the 12-60 as an afterthought before I had my GH5...so impressed with that lens though, the 50-200 will be my next lens...I considered the 8-18 but in the end did not feel I needed wider than the 12 on the GH5...but the 50-200 looks like a must have! Some impressions after you've played with it a bit would be great!

The Panasonic 45-175mm Vario X is a very good lens if you are on a budget. It has the added advantage of having internal zoom with no extension which is very rare.

Early impressions of 50-200 after using on white water rafting shoot:

- Great build

- I don't scientifically analyze lenses, more just holisitc impression, and no complaints on IQ. I read some people say it's soft at 200mm. I don't think so. I just think it's really easy to grab soft focus at 200mm, but when its on, its on.

- Amazing stabilization... I handheld things from a boat at 200mm and it's smooth...

- Focus by wire definitely has its limits for video. At the long focal length, you notice it in a more pronounced way - it is definitely not repeatable when you roll that ring and it's a bit of guess work and where your focus will actually land each time. But it's not so bad you can't use it, you just have to be willing to work with this slightly gimmicky feature. Probably not the best if you are tracking runners across a field and need silky smooth manual focus that you can count on. But for my uses - framing up a shot, and grabbing manual focus on the area - it's fine. And I can track "ok", usually the adjustment is not as smooth as something like a voigtlander but if you are cutting the shot and don't need to see the focus pull you can get used to it enough to keep re-focusing new shots. Or, have a slightly less than reliable focus pull as the subject moves.

- Stabilization when maxed out can show its limits in camera pans and movements. It's great to hold static and get the shot. If you need to pan along with something, or start moving a lot, you definitely get some of that IBIS+OIS pushed to the max choppiness as it tries to compensate for your movement. You'll need a tripod/monopod if you want to use this for moving tracking shots on the regular and turn of stabilzation.

Bottom line: this is a photo first line that works just fine for certain video use case scenarios. For me, plenty enough scenarios to justify the purchase. Plus, it's amazing piece of tech... at under $1700 it's a 400mm equivalent lens that can fit in your pocket and is uncannily rock solid stable at full telephoto reach... handheld... plus its weather sealed so it can take splashes on a rafting trip... For me this makes the m43 platform a little extra magic.
