I hate redesigns

Well I usually hate redesigning stuff but this time I think its for the better.

My webpage is totally revamped, now in color!
www.finaldesignstudios.com

Its basic, but I hate complications.
The portfolio is still getting tweaked but some stuff is linked, and goes to old pages where the ads are.

Let me know what you guys think.

I really like it. Basic is good.

But what do I know about web design? Look at my site for f*cks sake!

Hey horse, its nice to see that I'm not the only one who's shirking into basic web design. Your's is quite simple as well......actually, its a whole lot simpler.

By the way, for anyone who's interested, I'm the guy in the portfolio page looking quzically into the camera..............I was running out of pictures. :)

I think it looks good, its got that really modern feel to it, props. Im trying to design a web site now with fireworks......I cant even figure out what to do after I open the program

Horse
fill empty space with important looking graphics its a fantastic cop out

Thanks I like that feel. I'm a photoshop guy. Fireworks came with macromedia studio MX and I can't stand how it took my file associations over. I want to un-install it.

I just created it all in photoshop, imported it into dreamweaver and added hotspots for links. Real easy. did it all this afternoon.

do you recommend I use dreamweaver as opposed to fireworks.......I wanted to use Adobe .......i forgot the name of the prog, but its the adobe web design prog, im not sure if its available for mac though.

Bob-
Great site, simple and sweet - can't beat that combo. It looks great, has a nice clean look and feel to it. Sure it doesn't have all of the glits and glam, but it does say profesional.

Dyrseve-
ADOBE GOLIVE is the program your thinking of, and yes they do have it for the mac (I'm using it on a mac right now). I used it to design my site and I like using the adobe products because of how easily they integrate with each other. change the original file in photoshop and golive updates it for you. Although I must admit I only touch on the beginnings of what it can do. Web design is my weakness.

bob - Your design is very pro BUT NOBODY WILL EVER FIND IT or view it's beauty. :( Sorry, but numerous people have designed websites and posted them here and they've almost all made the same mistake.

NO TEXT = NO VISITORS

Basically, your site has no content or text, it's just one rasterized graphic. (Dude, even your copyright is part of the image. Come on!!!) Yes, it's beautiful but I don't consider it a REAL website and neither do search engines, because there's nothing to crawl and use as keywords. There's no real text. Your site won't be listed on any search sites because they won't see any content.

I HIGHLY recommend changing your design to include some real text paragraphs. Content is King! It's easy to do. Send me the background, without the text, and I'll get you something.

Just trying to help you get visitors. If your site sucked it wouldn't matter. But your design is good. It deserves visitors.

Dreamweaver and Fireworks are two products that are meant to compliment each other, not replace each other. You'd use Fireworks to create graphics for your web site, but you'll want to use Dreamweaver to put together the pages, including the graphics, HTML, tables, etc. If you do one of Macromedia's tutorials for each of the products, you should be able to usethe products in no time.

Cheers,

Josh

Good catch! As I said before web design is my weakest link, I never would have thought about or caught that one.

PK- what about meta-data? If he filled in the site content in the meta-data portion, wouldn't the search engines read and list that? (Not that the meta-data has been filled in on this site.) Is that another option? I would like to know because on my site I put all kinds of info in the meta-data thinking that it would still be searchable by the search engine. Thanks for your input.

Ryan - Search engines used to use meta data, but not as much now because of abuse (spammers). Now search engines rely on content and how many times a keyword is used on a page (even images ALT tags can be used). If you have keywords in your Title and Meta Data, that also match your content, then your site will be ranked higher. So meta tags can help a site but sites shouldn't rely on them. They don't have as much influence as they use to. :)

bob - Forgot. You also need text links to your other pages (portfolio, etc.) You can place them at the bottom of your site (near the Copyright). See http://www.laundryda.com for examples. Search engine spiders need text links to find your other pages, so they can crawl your entire site. Every bit helps. good luck.

BASTRDS!

Thanks for the tips PK, I've begun a slow rework of my site and will keep those tips in mind as I design the site, thanks again.

Wow. I never would have thought of that PK. I'm not too savy about search engines. And to be honest I've never submitted to any.

Because I'm running off of a local market only for the moment, I'm not too worried about it. But it could become a problem later. I have no clue what meta tags are for but what if I just added plain white text underneath the image? That way it blended in with the background. I could add just a keywords that pertained to what I do.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Yet another element I never knew would be problematic. Oh well, thats life.

"Because I'm running off of a local market only for the moment, I'm not too worried about it."

Actually, because you're aiming for the local market that's all the more reason to have better search engine positioning. You know the market you need to hit and that's MUCH easier than trying to hit a huge market!!! :) People in Fairbanks will most likely get on Yahoo or Google and search for "Fairbanks video services". With good placement of keywords and a high ranking on search engines, you'll get all their business.

Do it, do it.

:)

First of all, I think your site looks great - sleek simplicity. For what it's worth though, I might consider stating specifically what you do somewhere on the home page - Video Production. I assumed given this forum that your site was video related but it wasn't until I clicked on "services" that this was confirmed.

I'm sure it seems totally obvious to you that your site is video related but I think somewhere very early on it might benefit to put "professional video services", "video production" or something like that. Looks great, though; enjoyed watching your clips.

Lookin good toilet. Take PK's advice to the brain. Search engine optimization is the blood of any site's success. If no one can find you, what's the point? I'm in the middle of a redesign as well. FUN FUN FUN! (sarcasm)
