Let's say you have a site like DVXuser... with a huge database of potential (and current customers)... wouldn't it be cool to have a bar graph... or perhaps a "bubble graph" of overlapping bubbles (like the guy on TED who devised a way to follow health and economic trends)... where you can choose features with an imaginary pool of money?
It would go something like this:
1) You sign in via a registered name, just like you do now... to help reduce junk contributions. I also think that the time and effort to do the survey itself would greatly reduce input from all but the actual end customers.
2) You click to a given product concept, which has a little bank icon with the MSRP represented.
3) Next to the item you have core attributes which take part of the MSRP away and start the product.
4) Next you have an array of options with a couple quality and cost variables for each... such as case design, or led size and resolution... or menu variables (IC options and electronic function) within the unit. Naturally each choice impacts the visible design and empties the MSRP vault.
5) The product is created visually on-screen... above or below budget requirements based on MSRP.
6) After a period of time... on a high-volume site such as DVXuser... you would have an evolved design of what people really want.
7) Have a bubble chart/graph to show where people spent the money... as well as a rendering of the predicted product based on the polls. (How does "my" product compare with the mainstream evolved design?)
If nothing else I think it would be a fun way to market a product that's already in production anyway... because obviously manufacturers try to do market research... but I think the perception of "ownership" of a product... even before it comes out... would impact sales favorably... depending on the level of perceived control a company wanted to have... they could only offer options that are likely to end up on the product... but the dream I had here is that we would TRULY design what comes next... since so many things have stupid options and lack some details we often want.
