I edited my first short film...now what?

I edited a short film shot on a Canon handheld miniDV cam in 60i. Nothing fancy, just some springtime outdoor stuff. I added some music and got it chopped just the way I want it. I tried exporting to a .MOV file, and it took about 15 minutes to render. But when I tried playing back the file in Quicktime, there was just a black picture. I tried moving the scroll bar a bit, and the picture would pop up, but it woudl freeze. I decided to just delete it and go back and find out what I did wrong. I tried moving the file to the Recycle Bin and Windows said it was too large. The file was over 7GBs! It was only like, four minutes long, so I'm curious to know what the hell I did wrong! And what should I be rendering to anyway? I guess I'd prefer QuickTime, as I'd like to host it somewhere for my friends to see. Thoughts?

Just delete the file without placing in the recycle bin. I like to render my original in avi. then I may make copies in other formats for the internet.

Yeah, but I want to put in on the net for my friends, and I'd like to put it in a format that's easy to get....like wmv or mov. So....?
