email written to a friend of mine

looks like it'll be more expensive then the mini35, bleh.

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

I got the exact same email this morning. I think this price is outrageous. It doesn't seem to do anything more than the mini35. Have these guys ever heard of "competitive pricing"... I wish them good luck although I think they are setting themselves up for failure with these products.

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

i guess their objective was to make be first to market with a comparable static solution for optical purposes

not budget purposes... too bad really. if someone builds one of these things and can hit the right price, they'll make a bit of money.

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

it does look a hell of a lot more pro than the mini35. The mini35 looks almost like a homemade job.

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

Having used the mini35, I can say that it doesn't look, act or feel like homemade -- it's a very professionally-crafted item. I'd gladly buy one if it was $2500 or less. Just can't swing $10,000...

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

Barry,
Yeah, the price of this lense and the DVX100 would be more than half way with the SDX900...

I remember you told that the mini35 looked "softer" than the anamorphic adapter, how could you mix the images from the mini35 and the anamorphic adapter ?

The mni35 seems to be perfect to get a very narrow DOF, but can we use it WITH the anamorphic adapter ?

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

The mini35 footage was definitely much softer than the anamorphic footage. But in a good way -- it looked more 35mm-like, less "sharp, video-y".

Could you mix them? Probably, if you ran a slight defocus filter in post.

Could you use them together? I believe so, and I kick myself for not trying it. If your still-camera lens has 72mm threads on the front, you should be able to attach the anamorphic to it...

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

I dont think any 'accessory' should cost more than actual camera. I can dream can I?

Mine does :) Too bad it has a true 16x9 mode though or it would be a fun little experiment.

I hafta agree with Barry.. When the sent me the mini-35 for a few days It felt like a tank, well made and machined very well. I could only dream I could make something like that :) Even the battery mount kicked ass.

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

I doubt you can do something like that with a $3K mini-mill . . .

Whats a ricer?

Re: I don't think the Movietube is our answer...

It's a term to somewhat derogatorily refer to guys who buy a cheap import car, then spend thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars "pimping it out". I think the term derives from "racer", but because they use typically Japanese cars, the word evolved to "ricer". You know, a $1500 old Civic with a $2,000 Nitrous Oxide system in it, $3,000 of custom bodywork, a $800 exhaust that makes it sound like Jeff Daniels on the toilet from "Dumb & Dumber", etc...

..for a good laugh, you should also check out :

http://www.riceboypage.com/

it hilarious, and mind you..just like the page says.. its not making fun of cars that are imports, and suped up that actually are fast with actually useful mods.. its making fun of cars that are trying to LOOK LIKE they are fast with completely stupid mods that do nothig for the peice of junk car they are on .
