I buy a new HVX, play by all the rules, authorized dealer and all that, but there are no CARDS, except a 4gb for 900. 00+ or $1200.00+ for an 8gb.

0 on Ebay right now.

Most online outlets OUT OF STOCK

Is this a matter for the FTC to investigate as to why we sell camera's and you can't get the cards.

I do not want to hear about rebates, you win, you loose it just the luck of the draw.

But WHERE ARE THE CARDS.

All I want is to pay a fair price for a couple of cards

FTC???

The cards are popular. There have been recent price drops, so everyone has snatched them up. Bigger cards are on the way, etc. They are popular.

At least you can get the camera, and use it in SD in the meantime, or rent cards as needed. Or check the used market. I'm sure some folks will be letting go of some of their 8 giggers once their 16 gig cards start arriving.

Be glad that they are so popular. When Panny is able to catch back up, this way increased demand should only help to push prices lower.

There is a demand for cards... but really this is like buying a house and afterwards the seller says... well you can only live in it on the weekends...

Actually it's more like buying a house and being told that the date you sign the papers is a month away ... which happens all the time. :)

The cards will come. There's no foul play, no need to break out the inquisition.

Ignoring the rebates and all, the simple fact is that they're basically sold out of the 8GB cards right now. I think it's because Fox swooped in and bought 'em all, and the Australian broadcasting co. probably bought all that were left.

4's are discontinued, 8's are the only game in town right now, 16's are due to start arriving in a couple of weeks. Until then, yeah, things are probably gonna be pretty scarce.

Anyone know if they are going there are going to be 8gb cards made and delivered in that same shipment of the 16gb cards that are due at the end of this month? Are they even making any more 8gb cards?

Yes 8GB cards are current, and will in fact remain in high demand because the big broadcast camera, the HPX2000, won't be compatible with 16GB cards until sometime around August.

Hey Kris did you get your cards yet...

Maybe not, but I shoot the hell out of HDV, and am quite happy not having to dump every 15 minutes, add extra expensive equipment, etc.

I gotta say this- the DVX and HVX are without a doubt, very fine cameras. Too many folks out there to argue with. But using an overblown/overpriced floppy disk just didn't make any sense to me. I almost feel the same about the firestores, but at least they hold a fair amount of footage.

16gb are gonna be out in a about a week or 2 and the 32gb cards out in Nov.
16gb will shoot 40 mins of video in 720p/24pn and the 32gb cards will shoot 80 mins in 720p/24pn mode. I would love to have either a Canon A-1 or HVX200, but I prefer the HVX. Also tapes in general are slowly going to be phased out. I was orginally thinking of getting a DVX, but I thought that HD is the future anyway and I can shoot both with the HVX200. And P2 media is getting bigger and cheaper as time goes on. 8gb cards were like $2200 when they came out, now they are at $700 and they will mostly likely drop again in a week or two when the 16gb's ($900) come out.

That's a lot better time than I thought. However, I still like having tape, just in case. And no, I really don't trust technology ;)

Ya, I hear ya, I like having a tape backup too. But I really don't like the tape glitches you get everyonce in a while. DVD media is cheap now, and Blu Ray will be cheap in time too. Backing up to DVD's will be/is standard now. You can back up to "pro" type tape too, even for DVCPROHD, I believe.

The problem with DVDs is, there is no standard. Those little hsandycams that shoot straight to DVD looked cool at first, but they don't even use a full sized DVD, and I'm not sure about editing precompressed footage.

Oh I didn't mean shoot to DVD, I mean use DVD as one form of backup storage. I'll probabably use harddrives & DVD's to back up files and footage.
Flash media (such as P2 and such) will be the standard eventually for videoing. It's not like harddrives where it has moving parts.

I believe RE1000 is talking about data storage on DVD not compressing to mpeg-2. I think Blue-Ray disc is a good choice for archive. But eventually Blue Ray will be replaced by some sort of holographic storage that will hold terrabytes intead of gigabytes.

Getting this back on topic, I too am a bit concerned about this. I will soon find myself in need of the HPX500, and a HVX200, and would like to compliment that with 8-12 16gig cards. The cameras are perfect, the format is perfect, but will I be able to purchase this gear in time for this project. I want this technology, I want to pay market value for it, but am worried about availability when it will be needed.
A great problem for Panasonic to have, but a problem none the less. Have they seriously steped up production to meet these demands, or are they staying status quo, and riding out this sucess. It is a concern that I am curious as to how it is being addressed.

Not having enough P2 cards is a big problem indeed. They are literally losing customers because of it. Think how many people/companies need a HVX200 w/cards right now but will get another camera setup because the unavailability of the P2 cards. Not everyone wants to invest, use, and lug around a firestone drive or a laptop. People and companies have deadlines and not everyone can afford to hold off for who knows how many weeks or months to find a certain number, or even just 1 P2 card for their HVX200. Obviously they would like to have lots of them available, but they should've planned this out a lot better.
