..hobbyist or not john ive seen you turn out some impressive stuff . better than the average bear. no sugar included here. just telling you how i see it. sometimes that only thing keeps us from realising a dream.. is the ability to realise how far weve really come , and how close we really are. and then, sooner or later we open our eyes one day and see that we are already there. cliche .. but true.

sorenson 3 compression definitely seems to darken your files a little bit; some compressors will let you compensate for this. i don't bother, but it pisses me off no end.

there is also this thing with the DVX that i've been wondering about for a while. so. you don't want to blow out your whites too badly cause that's always going to suck. so instead, you underexpose a little bit and then, if you're crafty, you can bring up parts of the curve to rescue the mids. but there's only so far you can push that, because it'll be noisy as all hell.

this is the best comparison i've found, just stumbled upon marcus hoffman's spec spots and grabbed them side by side - the film (left) is obviously way ahead, although perhaps some more colour correction might have fixed the DV footage up a bit. maybe one of these days i'll try to experiment with the camera to find some settings that help you keep more of the mids.

i'm guessing that the lighting on both shots was the same. perhaps if you really wanted to improve matters you could ND gel the windows, but that's only an option some of the time. Having sat in on a couple of telecine sessions the other day when we were deliberately testing under and overexposure on film, it's remarkable how much you can get away with before the footage starts to degrade. With video, you've pretty much got to get it right the first time round.

I didn't read all the posts, but Coltrain must be a professional. I like dark style, light style, medium, extra large, skinny, short, fat, stupid, mindless, scary, sad short and sweet. As long as it looks good. I'll make sure I don't ever do anything dark. No need to line myself up right next to the rest of the trendy DVXuser.com assholes. I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT 8)
