I challenge someone...

Re: I challenge someone...

If he did that everything would be under exposed Gabe! Coltrain how about you show us some of your perfectly exposed work and show us how it is done. I agree with many here, so yes I am jumping on the DVXuser bandwagon. there is lots of talent here, with many different styles.
With digital video you are rewarded more for being on the underside of exposure for a couple of reasons. One as stated is more saturated colour. Another thing is that in digital you can always bring up the image, but it is harder to pull down, as well once something is over exposed ther is no information to grab.
I agree that one of the worst downsides of DV is it's latitude. At times it is killer outside. Thus the importance of ND grads with DV. There are times when you just have to let things blow out. We just cannot depend on nine stops of latitude like a vision stock has. But we are paying eigh bucks for an hour of tape, not four hundred for ten minutes. It is a tough choice. But DV lets us be filmmakers.

Re: I challenge someone...

I'm just curious of what look you do like using DV? I like the DVX for its filmic 24p and Cinegamma curves. You apparently do not (which is all good). Do you just like the standard 'video' look?

Re: I challenge someone...

I actually am not really that angry about Coltrain's original post as some people on this thread seem to be. This made me decide to post something I've been wanting to say.

Before I get into it, first I have to say that compression does darken footage. I just produced a union dvx100 shoot that produced beautifully exposed footage that looked too dark on a computer monitor after web compression.

But for my opinion about Coltrain's post, I think too many critiques on this board are sugar-coated. The real world is harsh. I think honesty is the best policy to improve everyone's work. If you want to run with the big dogs in this business and make a living you need to be excellent in your speciality. People are hurting you when they lie about your work to make you feel good. If you're work sucks you should be told that, at that point you quit or get better.

I might not be the "nicest" poster on this board, but I am always honest, often brutally, and my criticisms are always constructive. There are a lot of amateurs on this board (I'm not saying that as a bad thing, I was for a long time), and most need to either improve or quit if they plan on making some kind of living.

Now if you're simply a hobbiest, do your thing and just love it. Ignore what I just said.

Re: I challenge someone...

while we are at it, we should talk about zooming and use of a tripod, does anyone else find zooming and tripod shots very amateur, oh yeah, and chroma keying...no matter how good it looks, its fake and so is the person using it.

and music in a film is overrated

Re: I challenge someone...

..i like to give a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.. give em candy in one hand and slap them with the other .. i call it

"the candy slapper"

no seriously though.. even if someones work is really bad.. ill be honest about it.. but i also try to look for what i like about it.. say what i like,, and what i dont like.. alot of people do this here which is good. becuase admonishment without encouragement to get better = sad little johnny. i dont want johnny to get sad.. i want him to get better.
sometimes johnny knows it stinks , and only need the encouragement part.. somtimes johnny is oblivious, and needs a "double slapper". sometimes johnny crossdresses, and thats just weird... anyway whether saying something good or bad its always important to be honest. all things considered.. the skill level of the person.. the typoe of project -professional or not.. and all that other jazz shuold be considerd before we hold everyone to professional standards. .. cause the jazz man taps -a tap taparoos his horn to the beat.. shooobidee bop bOP WHOAAAAAAAW! WAAW! wickity WAAAAAW!

and un-seriously though.. i would hope that if theres a shred of somthing good that we can see it and roll into into a giant ball, and throw it into the air where a small bird with a hooke beak will catch it and fly in 12 circles before flopping to the ground and giving it to a fish with its dying breath. the fish would then eat it. ..you know.. that sort of thing.. you know what im saying.. .. its all about the fish in the end..
so many fish...it just blows my mind..

Zooming and tripod use when done well, can be the foundation of a great film.  Almost all of the shots in star wars are static shots, but it's action packed. (I assume that's what you mean about tripod shots; that they are static) There is a scene in A Man for All Seasons when Henry and More are talking outside.  It's a longish, chatty scene (in a good way because of the dialogue)  But Zinneman slowly (barely perceptible) zooms in, heightening the tension and giving the feeling of understated movement.  It's genius.

And as far as music in movies being overrated, I could not disagree more.  One word: Psycho.  Watch that shower scene with the sound off, or the scene when Norman Bates comes into the basement at the end. Night and day baby.

I think quick, short zooms may come into fashion -- they use that technique a lot on Arrested Development.

And some tripod shots might be boring, but I don't think using a tripod is necessarily amateur.

Re: I challenge someone...

i guess nobody sensed my sarcasm haha....let this thread die PLEASE

i couldnt live without zoom ,or music or a tripod (now that I own one ) and chroma keying is awesome

Re: I challenge someone...

my favorite zoom has got be the intro shot in a clockwork orange, when the ultraviolence theme is going and they start zooming out in the korova milk bar. it builds up so much tension but nobody really knows why?

Re: I challenge someone...

I was pretty sure Aaron was in sarcasm mode. Music in a film overated indeed.

And finally I would like to say there is no problem with under exposed footage, over exposed footage, the camera upside down, whatever. It's only amateurish if the filmmaker didnt think about the shot. If the film maker wants to film with the lens cap on and has a reason for doing so (even if no one else understands it) then he is a film maker in my book.

here endeth the lesson

Interesting, because he would be a mental patient in my book

Re: I challenge someone...

Well put Neil

I agree; criticism should always be constructive and not "That just plain sucks... Period"

If I am teaching my son how to play ball; I say "You know you have a strong arm and that was a good throw, but you need to look at me when you throw it and aim for the numbers..."

He's not going to get any better if I say "What the **** were you throwing to little man? Pay attention!"

This isn't about sugar coating; some people can take the heat and some people cannot. The world is a cruel place, but that does'nt mean we have to be assholes about it as in "Hey! I'm just prepping you for reality."

If the work is so bad it can't even warrant a good comment? At least end the note on a "Keep filming!" comment.

Me? As much as I want to become a filmmaker professionally, I know that I am simply a hobbyist at this point. I can still dream though.

Re: I challenge someone...

Jeez disjecta, Im guessing you dont want to see my film "Lens Cap Visions"? It's 10 hours of complete black, but i can assure you it is perfectly exposed. :P ;D
