my copy of sony vegas home version (hey don't laugh) exports mpegs that look like crapola. forgive the dumb obvious question, but whats the real reason behind this? I am upgrading to more pro version of vegas, but am I ultimately trying to get a better ...erm...codec ? I want to export DVD quality video (SD, I shoot on a DVX100- again, don't laugh) eventually.

The question I'd have is if the 'bit rate' is settable and if so, what do you have it set to. For SD 'high quality', you should have a bit rate of 6+ Mb/s. If you are down in the 1-2 Mb/s that could explain 'crapola' quality.

I don't know anything about Vegas... so, perhaps for the 'home version' there is no option for setting quality parameters for the resulting MPeg-2 stream.

You can control the max, min and average bit rate separately in movie studio platinum - which us what I guess might be meant by 'sony vegas home version' - when you go to render the video, select mpeg2 and then open the customs settings window. Many on-line guides to this program, of which this one looks pretty good and has bits very relevant to the OP's question: http://www.moviestudiozen.com/rendering-video-movie-studio-articles. Hope it helps. Cheers, Roland

If you want good-quality MPEG-2, then use the DVD Architect template (but be sure to enable audio).

But unless this is for DVD specifically, you have much better choices than MPEG-2. What exactly do you want to do with this once you render?

Also use 2-pass encoding, where the first pass will determine the best way to use the bandwidth of your data-rate, and the second pass will actually do the encoding. 2 pass encoding is significantly better than 1 pass encoding.

Thank for responses, everyone- Vegas Home doesn't give me options for MPEG-2 it should've been obvious I'd have to upgrade, my concern is being able to make something DVD worthy eventually.
