i cant explain this...recording issue

ive found that somtimes when i review my footage in vtr mode in the feild, and the tape stops right at the last timecode #, and i hit the button to switch to camera mode so the tape is still in the same position, i will record from there, and the timecode will continue as normal, but when i reached the end of the tape (60 min), and my timecode was only 39 min somthing secs. i finally discovered what causes the long pauses between some scene takes when capturing from time to time(what i used to think was caused by the system stalling with the device controll or somthing..) is actually a long spot of blnak tape inbetween lets say timecode # 00:00:43:22 and 00:00:43:23..really odd. cause i dont fast forward or move the tape transport at all past the end of the reviewed section, and the timecode is set to regen, but somehow the timecode continues with the next sequential frame, only about 5feet or so further down the tape after a long blank spot.. it is the weirdest thing, but yesterday when capturing i was sitting through one of these pauses with the timcode frozen and picked up the cam and saw the tape was still playing, . of course this dosent make a difference in the final caputured file, because the nle only records frames with a timecode, soi just let it play through the balnk spot because it just stops recording when theres no timecode, and then starts again as soon as it continues, so the file is seemless. but i cant explain this.. its not a timecode break wher the timecode would start over from all 0s..just a break in the recording on the tape. varying sizes of blank spots with no video or timecode.. wierd.. doesnt really bother me ...except that i get a little less vid time on a tape than i should get.. only happens after ive revieved a section of tape and then continue recording..and not every time. anyone else get this ever.

Re: i cant explain this...recording issue

This is WEIRD. No I've never had this happen. I suppose your search setting is to end of recording and not to next blank.

When you review your video, does the tape transport mechanism stop when the time code stops? It should.

Re: i cant explain this...recording issue

i dont even use the search function.. i just go into vtr mode--rewind a few sec or so, and then watch the take..then yes the cam stops at the last recorded timecode #, and i just hit the buttont oswitch back to cam mode, and the tape shouldnt have moved, and the same last timecode # is still displayed, but theres like some odd amount (ive waited through 5 min of blank tape before..but again, its different each time it happens, and doesnt happen all the time )of blank space between the last record point, and where it picks up recording again. without a timecode break..the timcode just starts on that same # 5 feet down the tape or so.. it is really weird ill have to watch the transport next time i do this to see if it moves at all. other than that im not too worried about it, but it does annoy me.

Re: i cant explain this...recording issue

It almost sounds like you may have accidentally hit FF while in VTR mode. The timecode that's displayed is the last timecode it saw, even if it's gone past it. So, it may have still be displaying your last timecode even though it was well beyond it and out into blank territory on the tape.

I mean, it has to get out there somehow right? You're not losing footage are you? If you're not, then whereever it starts recording is whereever it was when it started recording...so if it's 5 feet out into blank territory then it got there before hand.

I just reread your message...I wonder if it just keeps on playing when you switch back to camera mode, I bet this is what's happening. Make sure and hit stop first, or just use the preview button which has always worked for me...it rewinds a few secs, plays your footage and then stops on the last timecode...essentially the same thing you're trying to do manually.

Re: i cant explain this...recording issue

you know .. i havnt had time to test it out yet, but i bet it does just keep playing , not even when i go into cam mode, cause the cam dosent work like that, but before hand , when in vtr mode, i bet it just plays past the timecode # into blank area, and it just keeps displaying the last timecode #
most of the time the cam stops at the end of the timcode, but it may just keep going somtimes till i switch to cam mode. ill have to take a look, but from now on im just going to be sure i stop it in the last few frames of the viewable image on the tape from the last take after reviewing . yeah that makes sense.. thanks ! ill test to be sure but im pretty sure thats it.

most of the time i need more than a few secs to review, so i dont really use the rec check button at all .
