I can afford a mixer/pre-amp OR a recorder...

The main thing is, you should be thinking multichannel, so whether it is four or eight, with the option for just two, of course, if you are in a hurry, the 680 looks very good.
......

For a sound guy I would agree, but since we are talking about a non sound guy I completely disagree. I don't think filmmakers should move outside of one (maybe two at a stretch) feeds with out a dedicated sound person. It's just a mess in post. Eight channels of junk is still junk. They need to focus on getting ONE decent recording. Adding more channels has never, in my experience, gotten better sound at the no-budget level and often leads to a nightmare in post as you try to find something usable in the mess.

Even with an experienced mixer you often get one or two "good" tracks and the rest are set and forget feeds. The extras are sometimes life savers but usually they are just muted.

And the complexity goes up dramatically. I've had more and more shows come in with 4+ tracks (one came in with 14!) and all of them have been worse than shows with one or two tracks.
