I Am Quitting Smoking Monday.

Good luck guys. I smoked for 20 years. I've quit now for 11 years. It was the best thing I've ever done healthwise. Here is what I did.

I got the nicotine gum. Great stuff.
I even for the first few days got some little cigars and just puffed on them when I needed a smoked bad. Something to do with your hands and mouth. Do not inhale.
Don't try and give anything else up. This is hard enough. Don't give up coffee or if you want a drink. JUST DON"T SMOKE when your doing it.
Take it one day at a time.

I really think smoking is more of a habit than an addiction. There is a difference. A habit is something you do over and over and it becomes part of you. An addiction is more than that. There may be some of that but not like painkillers or heroin, etc.

Your body will adjust to no nicotine pretty fast. But your mind will say,,"you need a smoke when your shaving, with your coffee, in the car, after sex on and on. When you feel like you need one chew the nicotine gum. Take it a day at a time.

Why after I work-out (This has been true in the past) do I want to smoke even more? Is it a Blood Pressure thing? What? I need a smoke. Stay on Target.

This is because after years of smoking, your body thinks that oxygen is a foreign substance and is trying to dilute it with carbon monoxide. As you get healthier, the CO levels in your blood will drop, and this effect will go away. Your body has to go thru detox, and that happens in "layers" or stairsteps, with some resting equilibriums along the way. Be careful about doing too much too fast.

When I really needed something to do with my hands (and mouth) when I stopped smoking I chewed on uncooked spaghetti. I'd stick a piece in my mouth and chew it slowly. It would keep my mind off the craving. Sucking on a straw helped, too.

Man. I am hurting today. I am not going to have even one smoke, one puff, nada. BUt I feel; loopy almost. Damn it sounds so good; evil evil evil. I will not smoke. I am a non smoker. I am smoke free.

FOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright be cool. Chill. Breathe Daniel San.

dude, i swear .. i will send you a prize for doing this if you make it. the prize might suck since i am investing in something right now and moving and having a new baby and all. but .. dangit, ..it will be a prize. that of course goes for you too jarred. prizes all around.. on me. i cant promise it will cost more than it will to mail it, but there will be alot of love in that package by gosh.

Right now.

I feel like I am crawling out of my skin. Literally.

When I get up to walk outside and get some 'Fresh Air' (Which used to be SMOKE AIR) I am almost Dizzy. Light Headed.

I can feel this Sensation of Crawling Out of My Skin in all parts of my body; fingers, arms, legs, eyes, behind my eyes.

Smell is starting to come back. I was outside and I smelled things all of a sudden; flowers, food nearby, exhaust. And the WIND. The WIND had an almost Smell to it.

I'm pissed that smoking is bad for you. I'm pissed that I even started. I'm pissed that this drug has a grip on my skull.

The Craving Surges are bad today.

hang in there john, the physical addiction will be gone soon. everything you're experiencing is normal. don't forget to keep drinking your water.

I found that a nice spliff really helped me when I was trying to quit. Oh, wait... that was when I threw out my back.

Never mind.

Your right John,,smoking was always fun. But its just down right bad for you. My mother died a few months ago of lung cancer. You will be better in the long run. And yes you are a ex-smoker now.

Well John your doing better than me.. Ive had 3 smokes since we started this quiting thing, but it works out to less than one a day so its still pretty good. I swear I have more energy though already somehow.. my mind is clearer. However, I picked up another bad habit.. a tendancy for me to eat when I feel the urge for a smoke, which isnt that good of a tradeoff. Sure my lungs will be clean but I will weigh 500 pounds.

John, quitting an addiction is hard. Teasing yourself with "just one puff" makes it a bit easier on your psyche for a few minutes, but lengthens the amount of time you will suffer. Your body is repairing itself pretty quickly right now, and every puff gives it a reprieve from doing that work. But it also sets back the points where it will be over the "hard part". Cleansing is hard because our body is used to loafing instead of cleansing. But if you can get thru a day without even one puff (and no hanging around smokey bars either!!) you will hit a threshold where your body will surrender to your will and just get on with the process (probably at start of day 3 without a puff). You are already feeling the effects of being able to smell again, and hopefully that will motivate you. Trust me when I say that these remarkable smells are only the beginning. Wait until food starts to taste WONDERFUL. :)

Keep drinking water, as much as you can stand. Not tea, not diet drinks, water. A gallon a day or MORE. The water will help flush all those loosened toxins out. You may have some bad coughing fits, but just get thru it. A puff or two will stop the coughing, but only because it stops the detox. Just drink more water. (have you been hacking up any black crap yet?) Jarred, you too. Drink water instead of eating. Another thing that will help is to go buy a loofah sponge and use that when you shower to really scrub your skin clean. The skin is a major elimination organ, and that crap you have been smoking is oozing out your pores. When your nose starts working better, you are going to get a whiff of yourself and be really grossed out. The loofah will help that, or even avoid it. Your clean happy skin will be able to help detox even faster. And your friends will thank you too. [end of daily advice].

Keep on going, you are almost thru the hardest part.

I even chewed on toothpicks , but I gave them up too. Like I said your mind has a habit. Your mouth and hands need something to do. The detox part won't last long. But the habit not the physical addiction will last longer. So find something to do instead of eating.

I smoked a pack to two packs a day for 20 years. I used the patch for about 3 days, then the gum, toothpicks etc. After 11 years I know it was the best health choice I ever made. Plus you will save some money!!

Hey im trying the water thing and it seems to be working pretty well actually.. not as a flush but just to keep me entertained.
