I Am Quitting Smoking Monday.

i grew up with my dad as an oncologist. at risk of stating the obvious, have to say that not smoking is one of the most important things that you can do for your health. i wish you both the best. know it isn't easy.

Don't patronize me vjbrennan.

(Sorry; pre-traumatic quitting smoking syndrome)

Bring it on brother. If you wanna vent, this is the place. A whole friggin thread dedicated to your bellyachin' Do your worst. Just lay off the smokes.

haha

Kind of why I wanted to use this thread; too look back and see the progression or decay. It's midnight; I'll be in bed soon but am already on my 'last few smokes'

FYI - I hope you caught me in funny sarcsm and not at all serious!

Just remember that your nicotine balanced out the caffeine. If you quit smoking and don't at least cut back on coffee (try decaf), your body will really crave the nicotine and then you may get the jitters. If you do, it is not that you need nicotine, but that you need LESS caffeine without the nicotine added in.

Other good news: You body repairs itself at the rate of one month for every year of smoking. So in 21 months you will be a non-smoker forever!!! I have a few other facts and tricks, but hesitate to post them. If you start hacking and coughing up crap, let me know and I can maybe help keep you motivated, but premature knowledge might sabotage you too...

Good Luck to both you guys.

alright... you guys are my heroes for this month. first i just want to say that im proud of just the effort to do this. im really rooting for you guys. stay strong. what else can i say..

mad props.

OK, John; I don’t smoke, never have, never will, but I’ll jump in. I’ll get back into a healthier diet and back to the weights as you quit smoking. And heck, get rid of the morning coffee, too.

John,

I quit smoking about five years ago and I found that breaking habits related to smoking was harder than the chemical addictions for me. After morning cappuccino, I'd continue reading the paper with two cigarettes. These routines have to be shattered.

Like someone said above, if you find yourself in situations where you would be smoking, you have to be willing to walk away from the scenario - even if it means not hanging with your old chum who still imbibes.

You will be happy to know that even Charlotte, NC (just 20 miles from PMorris' NC headquarters) is doing something called "Smoke-Free Charlotte". Like California and NY, this is becoming an easier place to be a non-smoker! Slowly!

Very good decision John. Go get a good bicycle, some training and you won't touch a cigarette anymore...you will hate it and, feel much better and get away from the doctor.

John and Jarred, congrats guys. Great decision. It's hard, I know. Been there recently. Just remember, you cannot smoke ever again, not even a puff!

This really helped me and many others:

And I'm totally serious when I say NOT ONE PUFF. I was quit for 14 months when I got drunk with my buddies a few months ago after shooting a funny little short, and I gave in. Now I'm buying cigarettes again and have to go through quitting all over again. Granted, it's only a couple a day, but it's a powerful addiction.

This is hard for me to admit, even to myself. But this is a good place to be honest. I let my guard down. I gave in. I thought I was stronger than that. I thought I could leave it out of town, back by my buddies, but I couldn't. And it's shameful, I know. :(

I'm not trying to be a downer on your quit, guys, I'm just letting you know that there are rough seas ahead. And when it gets to be smooth sailing, please don't test the waters. Just sail on.

It's now Monday morning and 12 hours since John's last post. What do you guys think happened? I'm getting worried. John said he was giving up smoking, not DVXuser, right? Maybe the two go hand-in-hand.

NOOOOOOOooooooooooo! (breath) NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo!

Talk to us John! Breathe Gosh Dog it!!!

Don't you stop posting on us!!

CLEAR!!!!

Good luck guys, and John (and anyone else who has kids and smokes) your kids will really appreciate it and as you mentioned have you around a lot longer.

You've literally just stopped killing yourself.

(I've lost one relative to smoking related lung cancer and we're currently losing another, diagnosed and terminal)

along those lines: while lung cancer should be a primary concern, smoking adversely effects your blood pressure, heart, breathing, brain chemistry, skin, other organs, anyone sharing an environment with you, and even your DNA. also, it is a contributing factor to other kinds of cancer.

not wanting to be a downer, just heard too much about the effects. and again, all the best wishes on a great choice.

I had a five year, EVERY MORNING Starbucks Frappucinno habit that I kicked about three months ago. Talk about a major caffeine headache for about a week!
Only one a morning isn't that bad. You're talking about one cup of coffee. Compare that to the folks that drinks cups and cups of coffee all day long. There's also the diet coke/pepsi/etc crowd that pops one open in the morning instead of coffee. Then more sodas throughout the day. You can just feel their bone mass deteriating.

Now for the down side to one of those drinks... the amount of calories/sugar/carbs. Not helping if you live a non active lifestyle. And don't even think about the desert type versions. The Java[font=verdana, arial, geneva] Chip Frappuccino has somewhere around 650 calories and 25 grams of fat. That's more than a Big Mac.

Starbucks is evil.....
So true

I am a one cup of coffee per day girl, and only one Starbux doodiddy on the weekends, smallest size they have. I go non-caffeine the rest of the time. Even in tea, no caffeine. I guess I am lucky that I dont smoke and never have. My body doesnt tolerate (or maybe process alcohol) very well. I am currently trying to cut out sugar, and its nearing attemped manslaughter levels in aggitation.

John, buddy, good luck. I hope for your sake and your family's that you are doing well in this venture.
