I almost got duped by a hacked ebay accout!

I'ts a pretty funny story and it involves a dvx, so I thought I would post it here...

I just came across this DVX on sell on ebay. It was a smoking deal with plenty on "home made" pictures (Not stock ebay pics). I naturally felt compelled to bid on it, but before I did, I noticed something that cought my eye.
The buyer wanted Wire-Transfer only. I usually would say **** it, and look elsewhere, but then I saw that the guy had excelent feedback with plenty of satisfied customers.
The cam kept on looking like a good deal in my eye, and the feedback he had started to reassure me that it was a safe deal, but before I did, I sent him this exact message:

" Dear _______,
Would you accept paypal or cod? Why wire transfer only? I want to bid, but it seems a little sketchy to me...
-Nick"

and I got back this message:

"Sorry, I accept Wire Transfer only - it's money transfer from your bank account to my bank account. It's the most fastest and reliable way of payment."

Most reliable way my ass. Who the **** does this guy think I am, what was I born yesterday? I ignored the guy and looked elsewhere. Then about a day later I got this message from the same guy:

"I am e-mailing you to let you know that the person selling this camera has hacked into my account. DO NOT BID ON THIS! I have notified E-Bay"

Thank god I thought. I glad I didn't bid on that ****. Its cool that the guy took his time to get his accout back and warn me ahead of time before I did anything stupid...

So let this be a lesson to you guys (Although you probably know already) Protect your ass on EBAY! Listen to your instincts, dont do wire transferes, and as the saying goes "If its too good to be true, then it probably is"

Yep. A good horror story is always a great way to keep your vigilance. THanks

A similar thing happened to me when I asked the guy if I could pick up the item to save on shipping. He responded with some nonsense that was basically saying "No."

There's always some kind of redflag. Good thing you went with your gut.

Man, bad people ruin everything!!!!

Re: I almost got duped by a hacked ebay accout!

Don't do wire transfers, don't sell to someone who's in Indonesia and offers to buy immediately with a credit card, and don't ever take a deal where someone agrees to pay by certified check or cashier's check or money order, but they ask you to send part of the money back to them as a "commission" or "finder's fee" or anything like that. Or if they overpay and ask for a refund...

... and if you're unsure, use escrow, but only use an escrow company of YOUR CHOOSING -- never the seller's choice, because fake escrow is a rampant scam for online transactions.

good for your caution...I sell on e bay and as far as I know this wire(ing) method offers no insurance type policy's

What the hell did he mean (the person selling this camera)
what the hell did he mean (hacked into my acct)
that money transfer thing sounds like the nigerian scam methods.
...
do you mind if I use your horror story on my blog... no names or identifying marks will be left.

No, by all means, use it. The more that people know of these scams, the better...
