Hyson's New HD Matte Box

Does anyone have Hyson's new matte box called "X Matte Box"? I'm thinking of buying it but I'd like some feedback before I do. Is it well made?

Another question I have is the way it's attached to the lens. It's swing arm, but there doesn't seem to be a way to securely attach the back of the matte box to the front of the lens (like a clip). Here's a link to his website www.hysonfilms.com

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Just wanted to add that I know you need to use rails to attach the matte box. I'm just wondering about how the back of the matte box can be secured to the front of the lens. Is it just the pressure of the clamp holding it in place? If so, isn't that kind of flimsy? What I mean is, if the swing arm isn't tightened properly, would the matte box just "swing" away? I guess I would feel more secure if there were rails AND a clip to hold the matte box in place.

:dankk2:

I don't know much about that matte box, but at that price it doesn't compare to REDROCKMICRO's new matte box.

check it out at:

Its a matte box that will sit on rails. The beauty of this little package is that it is a swing away matte box meaning that you can get to the lens easily for cleaning or for switching lenses if you are using a 35mm adaptor.

Its got 3 filter stages which are rotatable I believe and the magic number is $500 US.

You'll need a rail system to hold it on but that's always best so that there's less pressure on your HVX or DVX's lens.

I'd personally check this out. Its said to to be high quality and perform much like an expensive ARRI matte box at a fraction of the price.

I got in line when it was just a fixed on rails spec. And then a month later they came back and said that swing out would be standard and for the same price.

Thanks

That particular mattebox hasn't hit the market yet and I don't think anyone has access to one. But for what it's worth I recently had a chance to use the Hyson HD matte box on a shoot and it's excellent. Solidly build, easy to put on and off and really gives that "wow" factor to the camera. I wouldn't expect the X Mattebox to be any less in term of quality.

I messed with the Redrock proto and was unimpressed. Probably a great deal for $500 but I bought the Hyson at $585 after getting his new plate and rods. IMHO the Hyson gear is the best for the money.

Ash,

Was the prototype the white one they had at NAB or the newer one with the swing out? What was it you didn't like? Is it the build, the materials or ease of use? Any feedback would be great.

thanks,

The X Mattebox also swings away and has 2 filter that rotate, 1 that is static, but is customizable upon order for more. It also folds up to a very small footprint, a unique feature among matteboxes.

Can anyone comment on how you would seal the gap between the back of the matte box and the front of the HVX200 lens? On most matte boxes I've used there's a ring/ clip that you can tighten around the lens to prevent light from "creeping" in, but I don't see anyting like that on the Hyson matte box.

Jade, you're right about the "wow" factor. That X matte box looks amazingly cool.

It should be the same deal: a step down ring. The HD mattebox will work with or without the rails via a stepdown ring. M'sure the X Mattebox will work the same way.

The HVX200 lens and the HD Mattebox meet up using the exact same method your lens hood that came with the HVX200 meets up with it.

It has the same cutout as the lens hood so a simple twist will lock it onto the HVX , seeled 100%

Hi Nic. Just wondering if you had any luck with finding out about Hyson's new "X Matte Box". Does it have the same ring as Hyson's other HD matte box where it's shaped like the original lens hood (that came with the HVX200) so that all you have to do is twist it in and it's 100% sealed? Thanks.

No answer yet, but i took a close look at the pics and it looks like it might need to be mounted on rails to use it . But again, thats not confirmed.

But that Mattebox is double the size of the HD Mattebox, so you might actually be better off putting on rails, because it will be alot of wieght on the HVX lens which is never recommended.

Think of the 2 matteboxes i guess as a Macbook and a Macbook Pro :)

Hi Nic. I think you're right about the rails. Looks like it's attached that way. But what I'm worried about is how the matte box is secured to the HVX lens to prevent light from coming in on the sides. If there isn't a clip that seals it 100%, wouldn't there be a risk of light sneaking directly into the HVX lens and flaring the image , which is one of the reaons why you use a matte box, correct? Thanks for answering my questions by the way!

Ok, thanks for waiting, sorry i didnt catch the email from Joel answering a few questions, of yours of course. so striaght from Joel at Hyson himself, summerized:

"...The X Matte Box is Very versitle in many ways attaching it to the lens directly is an option
like the HD Matte Box. there is also a plate ring that you can slide different size rings into
for use with 35 mm lens to keep light out. But it's recommended to have a rail system.
Their will be all types of accessories that are included in the package.
The X Matte Box can be used many ways and it's still Super Lighter than it looks
with Anodized aluminum Filter holders and Frame. The Swing arm that has 2 swinging
points. Under the Matte Box that swings forward and the the Elbow swing arm that swings
the whole matte box away to the side to get to the lenses."

so it can actually attach to HVX so thats cool, and also cool that it can have rings put in to do exactly as you want, keep that light that could possibly sneak in, OUT!

So hope that helps.

I think it was the final proto. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt bad but not nearly as good as touted earlier in this thread. The filter holders were the real weak link, one broke while I was messing with it. The Hyson MB has just beefed up the filter holders to aluminum and while I have not touched one myself, I know a couple guys who got to see one in person and they said that for the price it was a no brainer.

Thanks Ash,

guilty as charged, it was me touting it earlier.

I know all along that they've said that the proto boxes aren't in the final materials so I'm hoping the finals won't have holders that can break [especially with my precious Tiffen filters in] - so redrock guys, aluminium filter holders please...

If it was white it was the first proto, if it was black or dark grey then its the current proto.

I have been totally impressed by the pictures, price and feature list of the Redrock.

I shouldn't have said that the Hyson doesn't compare at that price because as a number of you have pointed out the Hyson is an excellent product and outperforms what we know of the current Redrock prototype - although that may change on release.

I hope that the redrock is what it promises as I am holding out for that. Whilst the Hyson Looks good and is foldable [a real great bonus], I'm liking the flexibility of adding more stages with the Redrock and also the use of mattes in the front of the box to help eleminate extra light leakage.

Thanks again !

Richard
