Hypothetical: What franchise would you like to reboot?

Funny thing is, with the first Alien vs. Predator film, the most engaging part for me was the first act where they were traveling to the pyramid. Once the aliens hatched and the predators showed up, all the suspense was sucked out and it felt like one big action sequence without much to it besides, "hey, look at these great effects."

I agree, but it wasn't the humans fault :P if they made the film creepy instead while focusing entirely on the marines it could be an awesome flick! :D

I always long for the day when Lucas passes on, and somehow the rights to Star Wars fall into the hands of a genius. I would want a complete reboot of the prequels. But I also would want that person to go in and change the number sequences to the classic movies. Making A New Hope episode one, and so on, and THEN the prequels... Why that order? Because it would maintain the surprise that Vader is Luke's father.... Then with the NEW prequels, as the A long time ago graphic comes up you hear a voice over of Alec Guiness from old trilogy talking about The Jedi knights, and then into the film. This would ensure that you could watch the movies in this order preserving all the surprises, and with a completely redone prequel trilogy, you would create all new surprises. I even have ideas of how the movies should go.

At the very least they could have given us a film with Colonial Marines facing off against Aliens and Predators. Also, I think setting it in present day on Earth is boring. Part of what made Alien and Aliens so great were the isolated yet vast and lonely environments of deep space and the storm blasted colony moon where the alien derelict was discovered. The first Predator worked well on Earth in the jungle, but once you bring the alien into the mix, it needs to be set in the future and on some planet in the far reaches of space.

As several years have passed since Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, I think that it was a mistake to do the origin story of Darth Vader. The whole power and mystique of the character was that the audience wasn't told much at all about him. He was a shadowy figure of power that is still one of cinema's greatest villains ever. Showing him as a young boy saps the primal mystery of his character. I think the prequel trilogy would have been better if it hadn't been about Anakin Skywalker, but maybe Obi Wan or set farther back before any of these characters were born yet.

Same thing with Yoda in the prequels. He is so much more interesting when all we see of him is this old hermit living on Dagobah. Seeing him hop around swinging a light saber drains the wonderfully spiritual nature of how he was portrayed in Empire and Jedi.

I never really loved nor hated any of the Star Wars prequels, except the abysmal Phantom Menace which didn't feel like Star Wars at all. Until recently I enjoyed the other two as fun romps in the Star Wars universe. After trying to watch Attack of the Clones the other night, I am really beginning to see why people hate these prequels so much. I remember seeing Attack of the Clones and The Two Towers, both in 2002. The Star Wars prequels already look pretty dated technically and feel limp, while Lord of the Rings is seemingly getting better with age, like a fine wine.

I think the same thing might happen with Star Trek. The recently rebooted Trek and any sequels might make scads of dough, but eventually the fans will flock back to the original series, films, and TNG once the new ones have lost their luster.

I would love to re-do "the killer" series.

The Killer

Hard Boiled

I believe there was one more.

both were perfect. but an american version with the right actors would be crazy.

Agreed. I never understood this fascination with origin stories - sure, sometimes they can be pretty great, but for the most part I don't need to know where a character 'came from,' if the character is well-drawn by the point in his story at which I first meet him...

...and the origin stories are rarely sufficiently interesting or well-told, to do much more than kind of spoil the character anyway. The background we got on Vader in the first set of films to be made, was plenty. The horribly protracted and yet essentially empty treatment he got in the more recent films just basically stuck on a backwards pair of clay feet. Who needed it?

And let's face it, a huge part of what made Vader such a great character in the originals was the helmet, the cape, and the voice. Just the way he sounded and his towering presence told us so much about him in a certain sense.

The biggest problem with the prequel trilogy is that really, Phantom Menace isn't needed. Think of how lame it would have been if Star Wars started with Luke as a ten year old instead of the young man he was when we first meet him. Also, one entire film in the prequel trilogy with Vader in his black suit with the James Earl Jones voice could've been interesting, instead of only getting a glimpse of it at the end of the third one. Of course, there were lots of other lame things in the prequels like Jar Jar that really soured the whole experience.

As for prequels and origin stories, I think they can work at times, but it is a very dicey proposition to embark upon. I enjoyed Terminator Salvation this summer. Star Trek was fun too. For some reason the Star Wars prequels just kinda seemed to piss off more fans than it won over.

What would've been more interesting for Star Wars would've been a whole new cast of characters set in a period of time distant from the original trilogy. Maybe a Jedi themed movie that was modeled after classic samurai films or something. I'd love to see Lucas give the reins to some other filmmakers who loves Star Wars and let them play in the universe, but this time create something a little more mature and not so directly aimed at kids. Also, shoot the darn thing on film and in as many real locations as well as actually build the sets this time. Way too much digital work in every shot of the prequels. Although, as time passes I think Star Wars will continue to transition into more of a property for kids, leaving more and more fans of the original behind.

Yeah, from now on whenever I watch the Tantive sequence of Episode IV I'll see Hadyn Christensen's face behind the mask - and it will ruin it for me.

Yep. They'll keep following the money.
