Hype williams lights!

Simple. You take the black wrap and wrap it around the light so that only a small shaft of light shines through. No tutorial necessary.

What is a 'snoot'? Do you guys mean like... A matte box? Because I've never seen or heard of black wrap? What does that have to do with the lighs? How do I get THOSE?

Tommie,

Start reading this blog: http://lizardlandfilmvideo.blogspot.com/ . It is written by a girl at our office. She is posting an article a day about grip and electric. It is penned to help people learning and it comes with lots of pictures.

So you're saying that I should put a snoot around the light of color?
But where do I get the light of color is what I'm asking. What sort of light does a snoot go on?

And I quote:

I don't understand, is there a video tutorial that teaches how to do that?"

Really?? Forget the video tutorial, and get yourself out on a real set as a PA. Pay your dues, and learn how to be a filmmaker by working for/with trained experienced technicians.
Hype Williams didn't troll a message board asking entry level questions, and then start shooting big budget or even no budget videos the next day.

Sorry for bothering you guys. I'll just hit up a Home Depot and buy cheap lights and different color light bulbs like I began to. I just thought there were a more professional way to go about it. I wanted to know what light HYPE WILLIAMS used to pull this off. Thanks alot, God bless!

Tommie, people tried to help you go with professional solutions, but you don't seem to want to invest much time or effort in looking into the suggestions.

Who knows what specific lights he used? It doesn't matter. You can achieve similar results by doing the things suggested here -- use lights with gels to get the colors you want. Control where the light goes with black wrap, snoots, barn doors, or any of a myriad other lighting control devices.

But you're going to have to take some responsibility for this by going out there on your own and finding out what these things are once they're suggested to you. There's plenty of information available; all you have to do is Google the terms.

You will not find "colored light bulbs," especially vis-a-vis work lights at Home Depot, which are going to do this job for you, and you aren't going to be able to control the work lights to fit what you want to do.

But with gels, black wrap, snoots, black foamcore, or any number of things that professionals use every day, you might get results similar to what you want.

It's up to you, though, to take some effort of your own here.

And I thank everyone for their advice. I leave this thread now knowing what a snoot and black wrap is. But I was asking about the LIGHTS. If I can't get the lights from a hardware store, then what do you call the actual LIGHTS? Where can I get them? I was asking about the lights and got no response on that.

What are the NAMES of the light that you would THINK he did this with? A light safe enough to flash at a subject without burning them to death? That's all I want to know. What TYPE of LIGHT to buy

It's impossible to say what the brand of the light was, no more than you can say what microphone was used once it's gone through post. Something like this is usually done with fresnel light, so look into tungsten fresnel (not open face). There's a ton of brand like Arri, Cool Light, Lowel, Britek etc.

And it's official, no thread started by TommieGreen has ever gone without an argument.
