HVX200a Lens Question

I'm creating an animatic in Movie Storm. I want to make sure the lens settings are accurate so I can reproduce them on set.

I own a 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm set of nikons with a Letus Extreme and an HVX200a. How much does the HVX200a and Letus Extreme effect the field of view?

This is critical because I don't want to storyboard a shot for a 35mm lens, put the 35mm lens on my camera on set and have it be wider or narrower than intended.

Can anyone help with this?

Not the answer you want to hear, but: it depends. It depends on how far you zoom in on the HVX's lens. You can exactly match 35mm movie film, or you can match 35mm still film, or you can set it to a wide variety of other sizes. It all depends on the Z setting of your hVX lens.

Barry, can you walk me through the math?

All I want to be able to do is tell my animatic artist "yes, if we do a shot in the animatic on an 85mm lens we can match it on set with ease."

The determining factor here is the focal length required from the HVX to contain a clean GG frame from the Letus. Generally this is right around Z74-ish, (not sure about the new achromat) so at that zoom setting, you are very close to the full field of view provided by the lens. If not, a simple nudge of the tripod fixes things easily.

Are you using Cinema Primes or SLR lenses?

Tell your animatic artist to setup the camera for 35mm 1.85 Field of View in the program and with the 200A your zoom setting should be 32.0 (it changed because the lens is slightly wider I think, I need to retest). If you're using Cinema Primes (S4's, Master's, MKII's) your animatic will match what you get out of a 200A and Extreme.

That should match or be extremely close.

Thanks, Andrew & Kholi!

We're using SLR lenses. Kholi, I assume if we're shooting in 1:2.35 we should set the Field Of View for 2.35?

Also, if this gets Andrew & I (Andrew is the cinematographer on the project) very close, that's good enough. If we have to make a minor adjustment to match that's no big deal. I just want it to be close so Andrew knows exactly what lens to put on the camera for any given shot and I'm not needed to frame up the shot.
