HVX200 + Preamp in Favelas???

Hi all,

I´m shooting a documentary in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro using a HVX200 and Audio Technica 4073a. I intend to submit it to international movie festivals so I´m very concerned about having pro quality audio. Most of the content will be interviews on the streets and alleys.

My sound designer insists that I should get a preamp, that the internal one won´t give us all that "punch"...

Problem is that in Rio it is hard to rent good equipment, so I will have to buy it in NY.

Before I do that, can someone please tell me how bad will it sound without a preamp? Is it reeaaly necessary? And which one you guys suggest if I´m under a $500.00 budget?

Many thanks,

Calé Merege

A mixer/preamp will improve the quality and control of your audio. $500 is not much to work with. What other audio equipment you have? You are going to want all the extras; boompole, wind protection, cables, etc.

Cheers

I do have a K-Tek cabled boom pole, windshield, etc...

I guess I´ll end up buying either MP-1 or MM-1.

Many thanks for the help!

try to find used mp 2 or mix pre( shure 24 under shure name ) , it has continues gain , metering and headphones out . the mp-1 could work in steps only so you will hear the clicks when you increase or decrease the level .
something else what come to my mind is used wendt 2 which is better then mixpre IMO

I've gotten plenty quality audio with the built-in pres in the HVX. Don't bother with an external pre-amp unless you have a bunch more mics to mix, or you're really concerned about being able to ride the levels or have a peak-limiter in the chain. That is if you're really doing more uncontrolled stuff. But if you're doing an interview and have a moment to double-check a proper recording level, a good mic in the right place (presumably boomed as close as possible to the talent) plugged straight into the HVX will give totally pro sound.

Abracos e boa sorta com esse equipamento todo nas favelas. :)
