HVX200 Metadata into FCP

Depends which data you mean but in general no. To retain full metadata with the HVX you would need to work with P2 CMS, HD Log and/or Raylight.

Well there are demos for all three. Ultimately it depends how you plan to use the Metadata.

Premiere Pro CS3 retains all the metadata and is available on the Mac as well, so FCP isn't the only Mac choice.

P2CMS is a free program, HD Log isn't. I haven't used HD Log but I wouldn't doubt that it'd be substantially superior to P2CMS. HD Log also includes a Raylight-type functionality that lets you edit MXF files directly within FCP, IINM.

When Raylight or HD Log alters the MXF files is it permanent? Is it immediate? Is there a way of exporting the files in their original P2 Format?

I ask because my one concern with using one of these is archiving and restoring. If they alter the original P2 files and I need to access my footage five or ten years from now I will have one more layer in the process (HD Log/Raylight). That's one more thing to keep updated and to rely on moving forward.

I guess I could archive the P2's before bringing them in to an environment that instantly alters them but that adds another step in the workflow. I like to keep things simple and clean but I also recognize these products bring additional benefits.

Am I understanding this correctly? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"When Raylight or HD Log alters the MXF files is it permanent?"

Raylight does not alter the MXF files. It creates new proxie clips that reads the information on the real clips.

"Is it immediate?"

Yup. Very fast.

"Is there a way of exporting the files in their original P2 Format?"

Exporting from where? Raylight leaves them in their original state, it just creates small proxie files in the VIDEO folder that ties audio and video. THis is what FCP reads.

Don't alter the original files. Copy the files onto your media drive, then use Raylight to access them. Keep copies archived in a safe place.

"I guess I could archive the P2's before bringing them in to an environment that instantly alters them"

Again, Raylight does not alter them.

OK, I gotta do a small Raylight tutorial...

Raylight doesn't alter the MXF files in any way. It creates a pointer to the MXF files, the original MXF files remain untouched.

I'm sure HD Log works the same way.

Is it immediate?
Raylight immediately and instantaneously creates the pointers, yes.

Is there a way of exporting the files in their original P2 Format?
Raylight includes a way to export files back to P2-compatible MXF format.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'll probably incorporate one of the demos into my workflow and see how things go.

Cheers,
Jim
