HVX200 case for overhead bin on airplane

Well a lot of you have been taking this camera on trips with you along with the drives and the computer and all the extra stuff. I have just come from a trip and immediately knew I needed to make something a little more compact and fitting to bring on the plane with me (I've seen to many shot-put competitions from the baggage handlers to trust them with my camera and drives).

I think the pelican 1560 will hold the hvx200, fs-100, 500g g-drive, p2 cards, etc. all in a case that has wheels to roll around the airport (Very important) One case to go through check out (that was an experience trying to tell them I record on hard drives instead of tape as I am putting together what they destroyed.

What are you guys porting with you?

I just came back from a trip to Montana from Iowa. Since both cities are such small markets I flew regional jets both ways.

I finally settled on Porta Brace CSDV3U for my carry on bag. Even with that it was a tight fit into the overhead bin. My other carry on bag was for my 17" Mac laptop. It's a Targus bag. I left the big drives at home and packed two Firelite 80 gig firewire 800 drives with me and cleared off as much as I could with my 100gig laptop drive.

I also packed numerous blank Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD's with me to back up my footage as I shot it.
I checked my tripod in a Nalpak tripod case. It all went off without a hitch.
I'm thinking with a little re-configuring, I can fit my mattebox in the Porta Brace as well. I just want to make sure it's cushioned against the camera so the two don't rub up together.

I trucked the Porta Brace all over Montana and into Wyoming going all over Yellowstone Park. I previously had everything packed in a Lowe Super Photo Trekker from my still photography days. I liked the Porta Brace much better.

For when I drive to a spot I picked up a Porta Brace DVO2U to be able to have the Mattebox on the camera as well as room for a bunch of other stuff.

There are 2 hard cases that I know of that are the largest regulation size for carry on and have wheels, the Pelican 1510 and the im2500 Storm Case. I chose the storm case because it is slightly lighter, but both cases get high marks.

I use a lowe-Pro Computrekker Plus AW. It's heavy as F%$# but holds my HVX, 15" Powerbook, Mini G-Drive, P2 cards & accessories plus either an OWC Mercury elite Mirrored RAID and Shotgun Mic, or my Chrosziel 41150 Mattebox, Bridgeplate and Filter kit. The Tripod gets checked in a reinforced Portabrace.

BTW you have to take the hood off the HVX to get it into the backpack.

Does your back still work evinsky? Wow that is a lot to carry around in a backpack! Kodos to you! Good option for treking the equipment in to a remote area.

Bosindy, that 1510 looks a little small, will that hold the HVX200? Don't you think the pelican 1650 with the wheels, be regulation size? I would like to combine everything into one case (minus the Powerbook) and that will fit the overhead bin.

If not, that backpack is sounding better everyday, evinsky.

I have the im2500, not the 1510, but from what I hear (and since it is similar in size to the storm case) you should be able to fit the camera, p2 cars, charger, a couple of batteries , and 1 storage device. It all depends on if you are a creative plucker. The storm case has 3 layers of foam, rather than 2 with the pelican, so it may be a little easier to work with depth of the accessories. Regardless, the camera goes down to the 1/2 inch bottom mat on both cases in order for them to close. I use my cloth lens hood for a little more padding between the camera and the side of the case. I really like the storm case, it is solid, but I am sure the pelican is good as well.

Re: 1650 -I am pretty sure that both companies market these models as the biggest they have that are still regulation, but I have gotten bigger cases into overheads so it's each airline on a case by case basis. (excuse the pun).

I took a look at that im2500, looks real good, and if it fits the stuff you say it does, than that is the case for me! Adding all the dimentions together meets the 45" requirement from the airlines too! Thanks bosindy.

Now if they only had pre-board for photographers so we don't have to fight for bin space, that would be nice.

We went with the Pelican 1510. I heard it meets "All airline standards". Not just "most".
We get the camera, cards, 2 batteries, charger, cables and a couple emergency DV tapes. Oh yeh, and the manual!
That's what I gotta have and protect.

My PA was P.O.ed because it couldn't carry everything. But since I haul this camera around so much, I wanted a small case for the "basic camera Package".
We have other cases and a production trailer for everything we normally take on shoots.
It's a perfect balance of size and storage for us.

P.S. I love the wheels, but almost never use them. Asphault and sidewalk cracks are hard on electonics even when padded.
JMHO.

fyi, on some airlines in America, beneath the seat, there is about 8 solid inches of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the life vest or 12volt outlet (both positioned on the bottom side of the seat).
