HVX200 and 4 channels

You can get 4 channels of audio into a hvx200 using an outboard mixer, which would mix
the 4 channels down to 2 tracks

There are 4 TRACKS available on the 200 except tracks 3 and 4 are ALWAYS camera mic.
Only tracks 1 and 2 can be from an external source.

The HVX always records 4 channels, no matter what. It's not something you have to "get it to do", it always does.

As Rippie says, there are always four tracks, and two always come from the internal mic, and two from the XLR ports. You can change which track comes from where, but that's the math: two from the internal mic, two from the external XLRs.

a while back in the marketplace someone was selling an hvx200 with modded inputs so they could feed 4 channels to camera. i think it was using the mini xlr style connector on a box around where the onboard mic was located. kinda interesting.

one of my wants in the next version of hpx/hvx would be the ability to access those 2 additional channels, be it mini xlr, 1/8" mic in or another style of adapter similar to that on the dvc30/hmc40.

t'would be nice....

I personally wish there was an option to shut off 3 and 4 on the hvx200.
Ive had dozens of occasions where I walked in on edits or on dealing with on set editors
where they left all 4 tracks up not knowing any better.
It's always the "ohhh that sounds so much better" response after I tell them to mute 3 & 4.

I have no doubt that a few have slipped into the final product over the years.

The 170 has the ability to turn off the internal microphone, but the 200 doesn't.*

*well, short of using a pair of pliers...

Barry & Rippie,
Thanks to your post allow me to add my "ohh that sounds so much better" to your collection. I don't recall for sure but was I hearing the live feed from all 4 channels through the headphones or just the xlr's? I rented the HVX and have since returned it or I would test this on my own.

Any idea why I had 4 total copies of each clip? I ran the HVX straight to a firestore and then from the firestore to my PC. In the video folder there was 1 MXF file for each clip. But in the audio folder I had 4 times as many clips. Each one with three extra files.

Thanks,

Cole
