HVX200 720/24p Cadence Error aborted direct capture to FCP 5.04

Hello Everyone,

I just got the HVX200 a week ago, and I had a lame dance recital job that I was excited to spice up with some HD 720/24p dankness. My problem is that I can't afford the P2 workflow, so for this job I was willing to experiment by bringing my Apple G5 Quad to the shoot. I had tested out the direct to hard drive capture via FCP 5.04 with HD720/24p as well as shooting variable frame rates (ie: 60 frames for slow motion) and I didn't have any issues. However, the longest clips I filmed during my tests were less than 10 minutes....therefore, I would stop capturing and start a new clip every ten minutes or so at the recital.

HVX200 recording setup: 720/24p Framerate: 24
FCP Capture setup: Non-controllable device....HD720 24P...Capture Now.

So, as the little kids are on stage doing their adorable dances...my memory making factory shuts down...I look at my computer monitor and it says that capturing was aborted due to a cadence error. So, I quickly resort to plan B, which is a much compromised DV tape, and I press the red record button...and suddenly I'm back to being a lame stoneaged videographer in a darkened room wondering what went wrong with Barry Green's suggestion of Apple's "guaranteed direct to disk firewire workflow."

No offense to Barry.

My scratch disk was a 400GB WD Sata that was sort of running on empty. It failed capturing with 63 GB left....could that be the problem....big hard drive, weighed down at over 3/4 capacity. I was hoping to use a MacBook laptop for direct capture of Hi Definition streams while I wait for the P2 cards to come into my price range (or my credit card's spending limit)...but now I'm pretty sure that is out of the question unless someone can tell me that I was doing something wrong. I find it hard to trust a macbook when a G5 quad cannot get the job done.

Thanks for reading. Have an awesome day. rambo.
