HVX v DVX for SD output to DVD

Is it worth getting the HVX over the DVX if the purpose is to produce SD output to DVD?

Would the HD output of the HVX downrezzed for DVD show a significant improvement on the DVX SD capture? or is HD capture and downrezzing a hassle that achieves little benefit over SD capture?

from what i know, shooting in 4.2.2 will give you a much better image for dvd, if i'm not mistaken, the dvx burned to dvd will give you only 4.1.0 while the hvx should give you 4.2.0 to dvd and the full 4.2.2 to other SD mediums.

I tested this a while back by putting up scenery shots filmed with the DVX against Kaku Ito's DVCPROHD 720-files of swaying bamboo trees, downconverted of course. The difference was phenomenal. That was pretty much when I decided to get this camera, on our seven-year-old Sony 32" CRT Kaku's shots looked absolutely gorgeous, and the previously-beautiful DVX shots looked muddy and low detailed.

Downconversion was done in FCP's timeline, and the sceneries were shot by a very experienced cinematographer for our previous project.

I have no idea how the comparison between DVX's DV and HVX's DV is... I'm sure DVCPRO50 has better colors but does it have more detail?

When I get home tonight I will have a look at Vegas to see how I could go about capturing DVCPROHD and down converting for DVD

I would have already got a new DVX by now if it had been native 16:9 and I was not being distracted by the HVX.

The excitement in this forum seems to have shifted, is everyone turning RED or is it a chromatic aberration?

Yup..it's like digibeta..much better in detail and color than any flavor of DV.

DVCPRO50 doesn't necessarily have more luminance detail in and of itself, but its twice-as-high chroma resolution can indeed lead to a perception of more detail.

That's comparing format to format. But when comparing camera to camera, you have to take into account whether you're shooting 16x9 or not; in 16x9 mode the HVX will be much more detailed than the DVX would be. In 4x3 mode it's not that much of a difference at all.

I am not sure I understand this correctly. DVCPRO50 is 4.2.2 are you saying that for DVD the chrominance samples from alternate lines are discarded, and if so, at what stage is this done?

Do I need to do something or will the NLE (Vegas) do this on capture or output?

And thirdly is there anything to be gained in DVCPROHD capture and then downsampling for DVD?

DVD is an Mpeg-2 type compression, and the maximum detail for that compression is 4:2:0. Still, better than typical SD.

Thanks, but maybe I am getting ahead of myself as my NLE (Vegas) seems to have no provision for DVCPRO50, let alone DVCPRO100.

What do PC based HVXers edit their work on?
