HVX | Underwater housing options

I am making a doc this summer on the sockeye salmon return in AK. So we will mostly be shooting in moving rivers on and near the surface. I have used the epic housing with my old dvx, but am looking to step it up a bit and have the option in the future of scuba diving with it. I have been looking at the various housings out there and have narrowed it down to 3.

Equinox
Gates
Aquavideo

Can all you under water specialists out there feed me your opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of these 3 housings for the HVX. Right now I am leaning towards the Aquavideo based on the other thread on this topic in the archives, but would love an updated thread on the topic before i throw down.

Cheers,
Travis

Gates Housing

Travis,

Take this as a second-hand opinion. I recently returned from shooting in the Dry Tortugas, working down there with a gentleman who, let's just say, hosts and produces an outdoor show for a cable network. He had a Gates housing for his HVX, and he absolutely swore by their products. I don't know much about the other two, but this guy has spent the last fifteen years shooting on, in and around the water, and Gates is his choice.

I have heard great things about the Gates housing as well, it is just hard to pony up $6800 for it. Still giving it some thought, We will but most likely opt for the aquavideo due to the price/build quality. I will keep you posted.

I have ordered the Aquavideo housing from Mike Hastings. He was super helpful on the phone and steered me into a less expensive housing than I had originally planned for. I am looking forward to receiving it early next week and then shooting with it the following week. I will post some footage and pics of the setup.

Stuart Cummings was also a huge help in getting Mike's personal contact info and a big resource for discussing underwater work flow with the HVX.

Thanks Stuart and Mike.
