I shoot mainly to P2 anymore but over the past 6 months I have had several occasions where a tape I thought was shot in 24PA was actually being seen as normal 24P. This has happened on multiple HVX's and in multiple editing systems. I always assumed, that since the tapes in question were not shot by me, that it was operator error. I did a shoot Friday myself, came back to capture the tape and...uhh... same issue. Also have another friend with the same issue. In my case I can say with 100% confidence that the settings were correct.
Anyone else had this issue? For the more technically inclined, here is what I think is happening. Both FCP and Premiere Pro detect DVX and XL2 24PA 2:3:3:2 correctly and remove the extra frames properly. On a 2 camera shoot with an XL2 and HVX, both to tape and set for 2:3:3:2 24PA, the HVX shows up as 24P 2:3 pulldown and captures at 29.97, XL2 footage is fine and captures at 23.98. Why is that? It does not seem that the HVX is recording to tape correctly, either that or BOTH NLEs are interpreting it wrong. Here is the kicker, if you process it as 2:3 (capture as 29.97) and remove the extra frames with Cinema Tools or by checking remove pulldown from Premiere...the footage looks fine and the "C" frame is rebuilt properly. If you choose advanced pulldown removal, Cinema Tools warns that the footage was not shot with this kind of pulldown.
To me, that suggests the 24PA to tape function on the HVX is not working properly. This is confirmed on 3 different HVX's of varying age (from 1 year to 1 month old).
Any ideas????
