Shooting on HVX tomorrow and have no idea what to put the settings on.

It is a skit/commercial spoof that happens in a bedroom. One person. Occasional panning to follow him around room as he talks on phone. The walls are kind of white. Very simple scene. I guess I want it to look filmlike. I don't know much about the difference between 1080 and 720 HD. Does it matter? It will end up being played on computers and we'll output it to DVD to be played on HD televisions and normal televisions.

for dvd you really shouldnt use HD - just use dvcpro50 - it will be a lot easier to work with in post.

my fav settings for filmlike after testing many combos is

chroma +2
mast ped -3
detail -2
coring +3
and cine d

what exactly does it mean shooting in 'dvcpro50'? is that still recording on the p2 cards? under what scenario would i want to shoot in HD, cuz the client is hell bent on shooting HD (cuz he's heard about it so much in the media). i'm only a step higher than him in the knowledge department, so what do I say?

the hvx shoots in 3 modes to the p2 cards - dvcpro, dvcpro 50 (both standard def) and dvcproHD (hd format).

within dvcprohd it shoots 720P, and 1080i and 1080p.

If your destination is dvd - then you will lose any gains that hd gets you since it is an SD format. Beleive me, working with HD footage is no walk in the park - you need a good machine and the workflow is difficult at best. In addition its a lot of storage.

for the client tell him you are shooting dvcpro50 which has a much better color space then regular SD - tell him you only shoot hd if the final format will be HD (it wont). If that doesnt do it and he is hell bent on shooting HD just cause of the buzz word then you have some testing to do to get yourself up to speed on how to injest it to your computer and edit it.

let me know if you need help with that.

so DVCPRO 50 records to the PC cards, right?

And it doesn't matter that the HD footage would be played on an HD television via DVD. It would have to be on an HD DVD to matter, am I right?

Would I LOSE quality shooting in HD if the final playback is the media I mentioned? Or is the reason not to shoot in HD just that it's very difficult to work with since the files are so big, etc?

dvcpro50 does indeed record to the cards

the hd footage would need to be downrezzed to put on a dvd so it wouldnt matter at all - but you would need to downrez and that can look at good as native SD or worse depending on how it is done.

If you final format is not HD there is no reason to record HD - yes its a matter of headaches during post. There just is no reason unless you MIGHT need the HD later

If I shot something on mini-dv, and then dubbed it to a VHS tape, then shot the same thing on a VHS tape, and played both in my VCR, wouldn't the one shot on mini-dv look better? Even though I "downcoverted " it to video tape? Why don't those same rules apply to HD?

Because you can't play HD on a dvd. You have to down rez it to SD. So, in correlation to your example: You couldn't play the mini-dv through the VHS in the first place as it is a different format. You would have to bring the mini-dv down to the VHS "level" in which case it would be just like shooting w/ the VHS in the first place.

its not the display - its the distribution format - dvd can only hold so much information and that amount happens to be SD
