HVX protection--backcountry use

I'm wondering if anyone here ever takes their HVX into the backcountry and I'm wondering what sorts of things people use to carry/protect it.

I need to take it on some short to extended backcountry trips, so a camera backpack is not an option--i need to carry my camping and ski gear, etc.

So I'm wondering what people have tried.

If you're ruling out backpacks... about your only other option would be to get a pelican that you carry like a suitcase. It would be waterproof and could double as your chair at night!

yuk yuk.

ok, i wasn't clear enough: of course i'll carry a pack-- but a mountaineering/hiking backpack with camping equipment, etc in addition to my video gear. when i said a "camera backpack" is out of the question, i meant something like a kata or lowepro bag designed specifically for carrying camera gear--they wouldn't hold what i need to take.

i'm wondering what other people have done to carry their camera inside their normal old hiking backpack. i assume all those snowboard/skiiing/mountainbiking video makers are carrying their cameras in something....

They are probably using a kata or some other camera back pack as they go out for a day and shoot. If you want to go into the back country with ski gear & camping supplies for extended periods then you may need to have another person to carry tent, sleeping bags, food etc. and you carry camera equipment.

This is something for the HVX once you take it out of whatever your'e carrying it in.
I have one and take it skiing with me and in wet weather.

There really is no magic pill for what you want to do.

1.) You carry it in your gear pack.
2.) You hire a grip and he carries it for you.
3.) You use a quad or a horse or a mountain bike.
4.) You hire a helicopter to drop you at designated places/times.

The gear gets put into a pelican case, a Kata bag, a Portabrace or a cardboard box stuffed with newspaper and foam. Its that straight forward. Thats it thats all.

I've shot lots in the mountains on many crews. Some had big budgets some had no budgets. They all use the methods I list above.

I use mine on boats a lot and had to so a lot of leg work to find a water tight bag to fit everything, HVX, RebelXT, FS-100, etc. Nope, no magic bullet for this type of thing.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Here's my solution: bought some packcloth and have an old camping sleeping pad. Quickly sewed a basic padded pouch that the hvx goes into. Pretty easy to do except the box end. LEf t it open on one end and have a "plug" made from the camping pad that fits in at the end and leaves space for the viewfinder. Velcro strap holds this. This slips into a drybag bought at mountain equip coop.

The rest goes into a smaller drybag (p2 cards, batteries, dv tapes, some small cables.

Now to find a decent, very light tripod and solar charger...

My... but you are handy! Good job! Maybe you can sell KATA or Protabrace your pattern if it works well! :)
