HVX in Pelican 1510 *pic

So I finally made a decision and bought the Pelican 1510 for the HVX. I decided that even though I might not get everything in it I wanted, I loved the idea that it was carry-on approved for the airlines.

To my wonderful suprise, I was able to fit more than I expected. I fit the HVX, 2 P2 cards, 2 batteries, the remote, the charger, two cable areas, AND the P2 STORE! I love it. I couldn't be happier. Thanks to EVS for helping me out today!

Here's a pic of how I set it up:

How many layers of foam are left along the bottom where the HVX rests? (did you have to dig all the way down to get that depth?)

The case has two layers of pick n pluck and then the bottom pad. The camera goes through both of the pick n pluck layers and sits on the bottom pad. I never had to dig into the foam further than the pick n pluck allows so it fights in tight but it's completely padded.

Seeing all the stuff in it makes it look bigger. When the case is closed it looks pretty small, and then you open it up and see all that's inside and it all the sudden looks bigger. I was amazed as I kept putting stuff in.

*one tear* its so beautiful...lol

i really want one of these......so badly...lol....

i'm in no position to earn money (just out of a second month long stay in hospital for something that's been stopping me working for 9 months now...) and what little money i'm spending on scratchies isn't working either....lol...

I hate to bring this up - and maybe I have heard wrong - but its best to store the camera upright - so the camera should be facing the other way - you could accomplish this by turning the foam around.

Pelican is the best... I have a 1600 and it has my 35mm adapter lenses, camera, batteries, some mics, lav... awesome set up.

I have my camera facing the other direction, so my hand strap is the side that is up. It seems to make it easier to take the camera out of the case.

I'm also pretty sure your camera is upside down!

Good news, is that with so few moving parts, that shoudn't be a problem at all...

Do you have a pic handy? I'm hoping to find a case that will hold the HVX with rails and M2 still attached. I hate to always remove that stuff just to put it in the case for a location move etc.

Brian, how thick is the bottom layer of foam the HVX is resting on? Enough to provide good protection?

And when you close the case, how tight is it on the HVX. Would you say it's "squeezed" or "snug"?

I have been thinking about flipping the foam so the camera sits the other way, when the case is upright. Don't know how important that actually is. I do have a question on storage though. Most of the time this case will not be sitting upright on it's spine, but laying down like the pic has it. This means that either way the camera is not sitting upright, but on it's side. Is that really a problem?

It would be nice to have the handle side of the camera up instead of the LCD for easier pull out of the case. I may be thinking too much here, but the reason I did this, is because the lens actaully extends out on the side of the LCD more than the tape/handle side. I'll try to illustrate this point, it's hard just with words. If I put the HVX on it's side laying on a table, and I put the tape/handle side down it would rest on the handle and the XLR input. The lens has no pressure. If I were to lay it the other way around with the LCD screen down, the camera sits on the back end of the camera and the mattebox. So there is pressure on the lens. I didn't really like that.

I was going to just use the pick and pluck foam and create an extra level up so the lens had no pressure, and I'd have the handle side up, but the Pick n Pluck foam isn't cm/cm/cm cubes. It's more lik cm/cm/2 inches. So there would be a lot of work in creating that layer. So the camera had to lay flat on it's side. So I opted for it to rest handle down so there was not pressure on the lens.

Again, this is based off of the fact that I plan on having this thing stored with the case laying down like in the picture. Not up on it's spine. If you store the case sitting upright, then the camera would be sitting upright and this is all a moot point. But if it's o.k. for the camera I would like to store it on it's side and have the case laying flat. The Pelican doesn't seem to sit upright on it's spine very easily. At least not on my carpet. Tips easily on carpet. So i'm not storing it that way.

Plus, with handle side up, when you open the case you see the "miniDV" logo and a tape mechanism. YUCK! Screw that! When you open the case you want to see "DVCProHD P2" HELL YEAH!

that was the real reason I laid it this way ;)

the camera is meant to be stored upright - flip the foam, and store it upright. My pelican stays up just fine.

the lens is not an issue

Wow. Very good to see it actually inside a 1510. Thanks Brian.

I have the 1610 Hummer, but I will probably get the 1510 when I have to fly next time.

(I also can't imagine that it matters whether it's upside down. As long as it is padded well, it shouldn't make a difference which direction gravity is working--Now if it stops working altogether, we might all be in a jam.)

EDIT: Oooooo. Steadicamsteel--nice setup. Can I have it?
