HVX Footage aspect ratio / pixel shape wonkiness

Hello,
I'm having a strange issue with FCP 6 and footage from an HVX. When I look at the footage settings for my clips, they all show the dimensions as 960x720 pixel size 960x720
when I export a quicktime reference movie however using "current settings" the ouputed movie shows up in the Finder as 1280x720. Now so far this made sense to me since the HVX doens't have square pixels in my understanding, but where I'm confused now is when I imported the quicktime into After effects, it shows the properties of the quicktime as 960x720 but the footage is squished. The only way to get the footage to appear the correct dimensions is to set my composition to 1280x720 with square pixels.

I'm not sure what I'm not understanding about how After Effects and FCP see the footage?
Thanks!

ANAMORPHIC...the HPX shoots anamorphic HD, which is stretched vertically. 960x720 is anamorphic HD that works out to be 1280x720.
