HVX Follow Focus??

I see follow focus kits for the HVX using the factory lens....

but... is the factory lens a physically coupled focus ring (ie 100% repeatable by ring position)?

I know with a M2 the follow focus will be repeatable, but I'm wondering specifically about the factory lens.

Im not too sure what you mean, but the stock lens on the HVX spins around and around forever! And it takes quite a few spins to get from 0 to infinity focus. Why would you need a FF for the stock lens?

Ah well you answered my question, which confirmed my understanding.

As to why you would want it... well for the same reason you'd want it with any lens... namely for repeatable focus of any moving target in a composition where it won't be the camera's automatic or reliable choice for subject to focus on.

This is probably the single biggest "emotional struggle" in choosing between the JVC HD100 and the HVX.

The JVC has a real cinema style lens. Ok, so I've heard it's not the "best" optical quality, but it's certainly more than good enough for 720/24p. And it has physically coupled manual lens controls. Of course... it also lacks autofocus entirely.

GRRRR this is not a tradeoff I'm willing to make. Sometimes I need BOTH. Well, I NEED manual focus. Autofocus merely saves (a lot of) time and money whenever I don't need manual focus.

So I end up considering a HVX with a M2... but that has other disadvantages.

Grr.

Its just the HVX lens has such a deep depth, it wont come in real handy unless you are doing stuff zoomed in alot. But, of course im going to be biased, but the M2 and HVX combo is awesome. The FF there also attatched directly to the mattebox for use with the Stock HVX lens and without the need of rails.

Red Rock now has a ring that fits the stock HVX lens and works nicely with their follow focus.

Although not mechanical (darn electronic gizmos anyhow) a very reliable solution, made to work with the HVX is the BeBob FOXI -- frankly I am crazy about mine . . . use it all the time. (also permits IRIS adjustment).

Just stay away from any JBK product

The guy who runs it is an a-hole and his follow focus is a plastic home made piece of garbage. He stole 160$ from me too, for "restocking fees" that are nowhere mentioned on his site. He sells on ebay too. Just a warning to potential shoppers...

Zacuto makes a nice one with hard stops too.

Can you please tell me how good and reliable is Bebob Foxi Follow focus for HVX200. Are there some diferences in quality between this Foxi and clasical follow focus mounted directly to the focus ring on the camera?

the foxi focus is really really good.
I used a lot follow focus mechanical ones but this one is very good, very pricise. I did a lot documentaries with an do nothing more without it. Only the iris on it needs an upgrade but you will get used to it. Very wise investment.
