HVX Filter Question

Hello,

What brand/type of filters does everyone recommend for use with a mattebox and the HVX (so, what 4x4 or 4x5.65 filters)?

Also, why would I choose a 4x5.65 over a 4x4 (or vice versa)? What applications would this matter?

Thanks everyone.

Generally 4x4 should be fine unless your using the .6 Century adapter. Schneider or Tiffen are great.

Yeah, the 4x4 will cover the 16:9 aspect fine. It is close enough to the lens that the "16" doesn't get cropped.

There are many good brands--just make sure you are getting multi-coated glass. Oh, and if you are getting a protective clear filter (which is highly recommended), make sure you know your needs for an outside thread.

me in another thread said:
The entire [Indie Snap!] matte box assembly attaches to the camera by a screw-on adapter. You have to remove your HVX hood (which also eliminates the hood-cover (aka lens cap) for the HVX–you will need to be mindful of this). I noticed that the clear screw-on filter I got when I purchased the HVX did not come with outside threads. Consequently, I had to remove the protective filter to install the Snap box. (I suspect that a double-threaded filter would handle the weight of the box nicely.)

I'd like some info about this as well. I ordered the Indie Snap matte box (camera on the way too) and want to get a protective filter for the lens. Which one should I get?

Also, which manufacturer of 4x4 filters are best for this setup and where should I buy them from?

Thanks for the help.

I perfer Schneider optics filters but Tiffen is a close second. I don't have any experience with Formatt so I can't vouch for them. The best protector would be the B+W 82mm UV protector (MRC) the MRC is very important. It means multi reflective coating and it helps tremendously when using more than one filter or shooting into light sources.
