HVX Back Pack As Carry On

I've read up on different cases here for the HVX200. I'm travelling to NYC next month and my Porta Brace case is a bit too large to pass for a carry-on. Various peripherals i.e. wireless lavs, mic, chargers etc. I can pack in my stored luggage with the lighting system. I'd appreciate suggestions for a back pack solution as carry-on that will safely house the HVX, Firestore, and stretching it abit here maybe also a Nikon D70 SLR. Best pricing and where to buy IN US/CAN greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have been flying to NY, Florida and all over the place with the HVX. I bought the CineBags CB-20DV backpack, it's one of the cheapest and works very nicely. I can carry the HVX, six cards, three batteries, the AC power supply, three hard drives, my heapdphones, video iPod, owners manual, etc. all in this backpack. It's about $129.00 from B&H.

Downside is that it does not also hold my laptop. There are bags that will hold the HVX and a laptop but they all seem too deep to fit into the overhead bins. So I have to carry my PowerBook in a separate laptop case. No biggie.

Anyone know if the Kata MC-61 can fit in carry on? (i know on the site it doesn't have the airplane symbol for it)

I use the KATA 207, which will holds the HVX and 17" G4 laptop, 3 batteries, 4 cards, a Vidled on camera light, headphones, 2 lectro 400 wireless mic systems, Ondago hard drive, cables, lens cleaner and lots of other little goodies. It's big and heavy but comfortable on your back due to all the padding and straps. I have recently travelled from LA to Phoenix, Dallas, Miami, Buenos Aires, Puerto Vallarta. The only time it wouldn't fit in an overhead locker was on a small jet that only has the 2 seats either side of the aisle. In that situation I had to put in on the floor under the seat. I was always allowed to carry it on though.

Ah nice, the MC-61 is smaller than the 207 (i saw both in person) I was thinking of getting that 207, but didn't think I needed all that space and wanted something smaller. At B&H they are offering the trolley system for free with purchase of the mc-61. So then the mc-61 should be no problem on a plane.

I have a Kata 207 and I love it. It's JUST small enough to fit in an overhead on a plane. Excellent choice if your looking to haul an HVX a laptop and the max amount of toys.

If you are not looking at the 207. I would take the cine-bags CB-20DV backpack over the MC-61.

Any reason why? I was looking at the MC-61 since it seemed a lot smaller than the 207, plus it came with free trolley system. Isn't that Cinebag 20DV big? It looks like in the picture. I didn't mention it earlier, but the MC-61 has a slot for laptops.

For those using the 207: Is it large enough to carry a matte box, follow focus and rods attached? If not attached, at least in the backpack itself?

Definitely not attached and doubtful that you could get a matte box in there with camera. It would have to fold down to a height only slightly taller than the HVX sunshade.

I have a MC-61 and it is a little small for me. Don't get me wrong it's a good bag and the trolley comes in handy. I usually stack a light kit under the camera bag. However, It's not easy to dive into the bottom pouch and grab a quick battery. The side pouches hold my wireless mics but they are smashed in there pretty tight. Once I jam the camera in the case I couldn't imagine squeezing a laptop in the side pouch. Also, to fit in the overhead you have to remove the trolley and slide the bag in sideways. Things tend to shift during flight. Again, it's a good bag but I would recomend the cinebags backpack to get a little more real estate out of a carry-on bag

Thanks for the advice. I don't know which to get now. The cinebag just looks huge in the pictures, but not sure if it is or not. Is there anythign else like a mc-61 but a little bigger with a laptop slot? (i'm getting a 14" laptop)
I like the 207 too, but it's almost $100 more than the mc-61 and the cinebag.

Anyone used the Kata R-103 with a HVX and a laptop? And if so, can you put the camera upright? (not facing down)
SBRJ, with the MC-61, can you put in the laptop first then fit in the HVX ok?

Get the O'gio TY VIDEO back pack: http://www.ogio.com/product.php?product=57

I can't recommend this one enough- I have been using it to take my HVX, 2 hard drives, batteries, power supplies, 15" lap top, and a small book or two with me on my travels to europe. It fits on the plane, and has different compartments that you can move around to better suit your needs. Best of all, is that on the side of the bag there are straps for your tripod. So if you want to go hiking with your gear you can put your trip on your back pack. (You have ot check your tripod when traveling, as it will be to big to carry on with you.)

I think the bag runs about $150.

The Ty Evans bag! How could've I have forgotten about it! A video bag designed by a video guy. I think i'm going to get it. Do you think you can fit in there a VX1000 w/ 2 batteries and a HVX200 w/ 2 batteries, a 14" laptop, and a portable harddrive? Even if it doesn't, it still looks great, I don't really need to carry around 2 cameras.

EDIT: I didn't notice at first, but in the picture there is a HVX200 and a VX1000 in the bag!

I still can't believe I forgot about that bag. The mic spacers are a nice touch too, and the bag seems to be deep.

Thanks guys for the input and suggestions!

I was going to go with the 207 until these last couple of postings about the Ogio Ty Evans bag. Looks like it will carry everything I need and the price is pretty good as well. Cheers!

I agree, I was gonna go with a 207 too, till I got reminded of the Ogio Ty Video 2 bag. Great price and looks roomy as hell. And you can fit a DSLR in it! I'm probably gonna order mine this coming week, even though I don't have the HVX yet.

Thanks 235 Studios!

No problem - glad to help. I got the bag when I had the DVX, and it worked perfectly - and with the HVX it still works great. While I wouldn't pack it on a plane this way - when I'm hiking I can fit my HVX and M2 assembled in there - nothing else will fit in the inside, but there are enough pockets on the out side to carry batteries, lenses and my laptop.

I have this bag and really like it. Whether it will fit on the plane depends entirely on the plane, however. I took it to Australia on 747s and 777s and it fit with no problem. I've taken it on 737s and had to remove the trolley to make it fit. I've tried stuffing it into the tiny bins on MD88s and it will not fit at all. I'm taking the camera to the Bahamas shortly on a American Eagle regional jet...ain't no way I'm gonna set myself up for having to have them check my camera at the last minute! I'll hve to find another means of bagging it for the small flights.
