HVX-200a and Ikan V800HD: Exposure?

I purchased an external LCD monitor as a minor upgrade over the camera's LCD monitor.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Ikan V8000HD, which I've hooked up via component cables.

For footage that looks correctly exposed during shooting, I have to boost Shadow Luminance in Apple Color. Am I doing something wrong? Please tell me there's a better way than saying, "Hey, looks good. Now lets pour more light on it to be sure."

Forget about using an LCD for exposure, the dynamic range that the monitor is capable of displaying is extremely limited, especially the V8000HD which is not that good a monitor to start with anyway.

The 200a has a waveform monitor, use that. It's a way better function that will tell you the exact IRE of every thing in the scene so you can expose accordingly.

Does the HVX200a have the waveform monitor? I know the HPX170 has one, but I haven't found one on the HVX. I'm aware of checking exposure using Zebra and Marker.

I have some software waveform tools, but I'm reluctant to use my MacBook Pro on location. If it gets stolen, knocked off a table, etc. -- I can pretty much kiss my income goodbye.

I didn't think the 200a had a waveform. I have the 170, and love that capability. Had to train myself to look at it though, because I was used to shooting the 200 and always forgot ti was there.

I am looking at getting a field monitor myself, trying to find a marhshall, but they aint cheap.
