Humming In Background

Is there a way to isolate backround humming noises in audio? I want to be able to get rid of it or make it much less noticeable while keeping dialogue intact. Can anyone recommend a program that is good for this?

Thank You!

Extract your audio and then process it in a DAW. If your humming is AC mains related, try a series of notch filters at the fundamental frequency (60 Hz for North America) and the first few harmonics (120, 180, 240, 300, etc).

If you can nail down the fundamental and the first 3 or 4 harmonics, you will be able to get a considerable reduction. Often the ripple frequency (2nd harmonic or 120 Hz in this example) is the most offensive one. This will of course have sonic effects outside of removing the hum component, but if you keep the notch filters Q high (narrow bandwidth) it won't be too bad.
