Hello all, first I apologize if this wasn't the best area for this question.
I live in a basement apartment in Ontario Canada. I have lived in these for a long time and generally have not have problems with humidity, recently I changed apartments and this winter have had a slight issue. My RH meters (I have two, one in my gear cabinet and one in the room its in) Are reading an RH of close to 60% that's right where mold and other issues creep in.
This is a 80+ year old basement apartment with a boiler system for heat.... the boiler system is broken and so the temperature inside has been at its highest 20 degree Celsius (57 Fahrenheit) to some pretty chilling 14 Celsius (57 Fahrenheit for those of you in the US)... for the record average outdoor temperature is probably -5 (23 fH)
Now I know most people think of humidity in the hot summer months, with many even using AC to bring the levels down.... however can a cold outside and inside = more RH? When my heating system gets repaired could this problem be resolved.
Both my GF and I make a living 100% from our gear so we aim to keep it safe, a dry-box seems really expensive at the moment (especially one that would be big enough to accommodate us) so we were thinking about just getting a dehumidifier for this small apartment. Maybe just bring the entire place below 50%
Considering are lease is up in March and everywhere else I lived over the years has been between 20-45% (arguably too dry at times) I don't want to be throwing money at a Dry Box, that will be used for 3 months if a Dehumidifier will work just fine OR if this might just be due to the heater being broken.
Let me know
Thanks
