Hugo Awards for fan fiction works?

Are you talking about "World Enough and Time," the Star Trek fan production?

I guess I come at it from the flip side--it's a pretty sad commentary on the current state of affairs in Hollywood when all we have to put up against the Doctor and Captain Jack is that and a BSG episode.

IIRC, there was some question (and I can't find any links about it now) at the time the nomination was announced about whether the "New Voyages/Phase II" stuff is "fan film" or professional production. Certainly, that series in particular is produced at a level several leaps and bounds above the average "fan film" (which you can't always say about some of the other Trek projects on the web), and the inclusion of people like Marc Scott Zicree and George Takei in "World Enough and Time" blurred the line for a lot of people )including, apparently, the Hugo people). I usually don't have much interest in the internet "fan Trek" stuff (even as much of a Trekkie as I am :) ), but this and the "Of Gods and Men" project directed by Tim "Tuvok" Russ and starring several "real" Trek actors are at least somewhat interesting to me (although I haven't managed to watch any of them yet).

BTW, I'm stoked that Stardust won for long form. :D

Oh, those. :D Those have been around forever--the fanzine category started in 1956 according to Wikipedia, and the other two in '67.

I think the difference between those categories and Oscars for fan films is that fanzines and such have traditionally been a big part of the "SF movement," particularly back in the days before the Internets. I'm sure a lot of people voting on the Hugos read the 'zines and had their opinions about which was best. Never actually read one myself, but I've heard of it somehow, anyway... :)

I'm more surprised they gave an award to Stardust. I thought that film was lame. And calling the book The Yiddish Policeman's Union sci-fi or fantasy is really pushing the boundaries of the genre's definition. I guess it has an alternative-history element to its concept, but really it's a murder mystery.
