I'm curious what everyone's opinion is when it comes to the future of video on the web.
Right now Flash has pretty much standardized video playback on the web. But certain mobile devices and set top boxes cannot use Flash.
HTML5 includes a new video tag. This tag makes inserting video as simple as inserting an image into a web page. There is just a few issues with it right now. One of those issues is the codec being used.
Chrome, Safari, iPhone, Android and soon Internet Explorer 9 will all support H.264 for the video tag. Meanwhile Firefox and Opera are going the open source route do to H.264 licensing issues and pushing the Theora (ogg) video format.
Flash will probably stick around for a good many years. But sites like Youtube and video already have beta versions of their sites up that use HTML5 and H.264. You just can't use Firefox or Opera to view them.
What do you think the outcome of all of this will be? More so do you think Theora stands a chance at becoming a popular video format?
