Hpx500 Or Red One???

Not sure whether this is the right area to post this question, but I wanted to ask what people think. I have looked into both the red one and the hpx500 cameras and they both look to be amazing cameras.
I am trying to decide on what camera to propose for a future project. I was leaning towards the red camera but now i'm not sure whether the hpx500 would be a better option. The film is modern and to do with technology. It will be relatively low budget.

Any thoughts or advice? I will have to present the project and a budgetary plan etc later this year.

whatever camera it is, id rather buy at this price point. renting a camera that costs 17 grand to own is pointless due to the amount of flexibility u have when u own a camera...for re shoots, pick ups etc.

Red body is 17 grand, but you're forgetting about the hidden costs: accessories, lenses, post-workflow. I would definitely rent and put the money into production design, talent, etc.

definitely rent the first time. then if you make enough money, you can buy.

still say rent it. the hpx500 is 15000 no lens (maybe no viewfinder not sure) lens is 10000. tripods/mattebox/monitor etc.... another 10000. camera is 1/3 the price of the system.

hmmm, i'm just concerned that the total rental cost would end up being close to the cost of buying the camera etc. I would assume the cinematographer would come with his own lenses. Most good DP's generally have their lenses factored in. Maybe in this case that won't apply as the camera is expensive enough to not be in danger of being surpassed by a 4 - 6 week rental period.

also note that if the budget is a few hundred grand, spending 25 grand on having the camera and lenses may not be a terrible thing even if it is say ten grand more than having rented. I just know from one of my past films that those pick ups and reshoots will get you.

You can negotiate a good rental deal with most places. You'd be surprised at how accomodating rental places can/will be.

Yeah maybe you guys are right. I just like the idea of owning production critical equipment like the camera when doing low budget work. Owning my own dvx 100B made a HUGE difference on my last project compared to if I rented it for less money. For this, maybe rental is the way. I am looking for the highest quality and the red one may also be the best choice of the two even for a non thatrical film that needs no 35 mm blow up.
