Hey everyone.....
Before I begin my first post I would like to thank all who have contributed to this website.... especially the main players.... without your help I would still be living in the dark ages....
I have a HPX170 and I need to get a tripod. I like the sound of the new Vinten Vision 3AS system (tripod & head). On the Vinten website there is a felicity where you can enter the make & model of your camera and it suggests the tripod & head Vinten believes to be best suited to your particular camera.
As it happens, there is no HPX170 model to select but you can select the HVX200. When you enter the HVX200 as your camera, Vinten suggests the Vision 3AS system.
My problem is this......
In the small print it says, in terms of weight that can be mounted, the capacity is 4.4 to 11lbs. In the even smaller print it says that this weight should be at an 125mm center of gravity. The HPX170 out of the box weighs 4.2lbs. With the battery & P2 card on board the weight comes to 5lbs (info form BH).
Also, here is a quote from a review:
"Stripped to its shorts, my Canon XH A1 weighs in at about 5 lbs 10 ounces (2.575 kilos), but has an extraordinarily low C.O.G. At the heads minimum counterbalance setting, the V3 AS had the Canon bouncing back to horizontal like Skippy the Kangaroo. Hang on, I thought, I’ve seen this before, so I promptly put back on all those extras I usually have bolted to my A1, taking it’s total weight up to 7 pounds odd (3.225 kilos). Hey presto – perfect counterbalance."

My question is this......
Should I get the Vinten Vision 3AS for my HXP170........................
This will be my first tripod and I do not have anywhere I can go to do a hands on test so I have to buy in the dark. It is a lot of cash to spend especially if you are not sure the dam thing is going to work properly.
I know that if I add loads of gadgets to my camera the problem will disappear but as yet I do not have any......
Any advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated......
Cheers all....
Mac.......
