HPX 170 and FS-100: Why won't it display "HD" in line 11?

Hi All;

When I purchased my DXV100b a few years ago, I cannot remember any significant dificulties in getting right down to shooting, but my recent purchase of a HPX170 and a FS-100/250 to go with it also came with a full can of worms, none of whom I recognize. I consider this the first of several posts.

I am going by the book, have hooked up the camera and the firestore unit via firewire, and have recorded about a dozen shots. But now I am wondering if I have actually recorded HD, even though that was my intent and what I thought I have the camera set up to do.

Here's what I have done: The camera's REC FORMAT is set to 1080i/60i. (The 480i REC MODE is set to DVCPRO50, and that I cannot change.) I have followed the settings given in the manual for the HVX200, assuming they would be the same for the HPX; the UB MODE is set to FRM. RATE, and the 1394 CONTROL is set to BOTH. I have also set the FS-100 to TAPELESS. This enables the unit to start/stop via the camera.

The FS-100 is also set to RECORD: NORMAL, HDD MODE is set to DVCPROHD REC, and the DV FORMATS I have set to P2 for 5 shots and QUICKTIME for the rest. So everything ought to be set to record some test shots in HD, right?

But (as I discovered when I went further into the manual), when I click through the DISP button modes, I come to a screen that displays DV NTSC. According to the manual, I should see HD. I have checked the settings, and they remain the same.

So am I recording HD or not? I've reviewed the section a dozen times, and I can't figure out what I'm doing or thinking wrong. Am I missing something obvious? I'm going to load this into FCP next, but my inexperience will likely prevent me from recognizing the full story.

Any help is appreciated.

If you have the HPX170's REC FORMAT menu item set to 1080i/60i, then you're recording HD. See, the camera can only output the format you've chosen, over the firewire. So when the REC FORMAT is set to 1080, that means that the firewire is outputting 1080. And, the FireStore can't do any sort of cross-conversion or downconversion; it can only record what it's fed. So I have no doubt that your recordings are 1080i/60i.

Of course, playing back the footage on your computer will tell for certain, but I can't see how it could be anything but 1080i/60i in the scenario you described.
