HP Touchscreen

Even after playing with it for only a few minutes, I didn't want to go back to a mouse.

That way, the future lies. And the future is good.

They had a pretty slick commercial for this before The Dark Knight...as much as I hate commercials at the movies, I was impressed.

How'd you get your hands on it David? I haven't been following pc development much, is this the first of its kind?

I just played with it at Best Buy. AFAIK, it's the first of its kind to reach the consumer market, but it's built on technology that's been in development for a while, at Microsoft and partners.

I'm going to have to check it out.

Although I won't be fully satisfied until I'm editing in FCP like this:

How great would that be...

Well, assuming this thing works the same with editing apps as it does with the apps on the model on display, it wouldn't be that far from it, and I mean that.

This might be great for casual use, but seriously, I'm often on a computer for 8-10 hours a day, and my arms would get real tired.

I don't see how it would be more tiring than typing or using a mouse.

You'd have to be constantly raising your arms up toward the screen and employing a greater range of motion. My arms are currently propped against two armrests, and I move the mouse with my wrist mainly. For low/moderate use, I'm sure a touchscreen would be fine and actually sounds like fun. But for the amount of work I do everyday it would get very tiring.

I'm with Batutta on this. Also, I hate fingerprints on my screen and this would be a nightmare for that.

I'll wait for the mind/machine interface, where I can edit by pure thought. Or the Krell machine of creation, willing movies into existence with only my mind.

Not if it's flat in front of you, which is the way I would do it.

There is work being done ala minority report, using mainly mocap technology. Infact over some hacks with wiimote has been used to "emulate" minority report style use (you need to attach two LEDs to your fingers**), I'll digg it up and paste the link.

EDIT::

found it:

its Johnny Chung, same guy who did the last wiimote hack, headtracing one

**make that reflective markers, my memory was a bit hazzy

Check this out, even more useful!!

Really groovy. If it's at TED three years ago, it'll be in next years product. Generally speaking.
