HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

There is some cool HP commercials playing on TV right now that have these people holding white picture frames and the inside part of the frame goes from transparent to having part of a freeze frame from the shot and then it switches.

I am sure other people can explain that better than I can. How in the world did they do that and what program do you think they used? Pretty cool!

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

I haven't seen them, but it sounds like your describing them keying footage in. I'd very much like to see it!

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

Yeah -- I've seen that too... Do you think it is green screen? But then again, the footage is mooving behind and then becomes the picture...

I like the concept. Deconstructing Film -- we need a whole board on that.

((Like the opening sequence to Band of Brothers))

LOL -- yes, very cool ad, Kyle.

Maybe there's a green screen behind the person as well? I'm really just guessing, because I stil haven't seen it. :)

I think this commercial is just fantastic. Whoever thought of it did a brilliant job.

I don't think there's any keying going on, just some motion tracking. I'm no graphics expert but it looks like they just freeze a portion of the picture, then do some motion tracking in AfterEffects or something to pin that frozen piece to the empty frames. The frames are always empty.

Oh wow! Those are awesome! I was totally picturing something different. I think Barry is probably pretty close to how they did it.

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

I think barry does have it right on the dot. this stuff just makes me want to work harder. and how simple a concept it was...

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

Right on the head barry. Some very talented compositing work on their part.

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

You are absolutely right Barry.  Maybe a little time and effort but the concept on how to make the effect is a very simple idea.

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

I'm sure they didn't whip that off in a couple of afternoons. That Carnivale one Kai points out is really cool. However, I think it takes it up about 3 and a half notches, not 8. :)

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

After looking at the commercial again, I can see very subtle changes in the pictures as they move until they are set down. At least they didn't have to look far for an actor!

"Um yeah, we need a guy who can hold picture frames up in the air and set them down. Do you think you can find a guy who can do that?"

"I'll look around."

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

I think this commercial invovled more ingenuity than technical ability. The tech stuff was very good, but I don't think was as complicated as it may seem. It's the concept and the way they used it that i think really makes the difference...

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

I just think that the power of storyboarding is probably a big clue to pulling this one off in such a perfect way. I think more and more of storeyboarding as in concentrating your efforts on what setup is most needed. And this is QED

Don't forget the selection of music which really makes the whole thing click.

And practice, practice, practice!

Re: HP Commercial: How'd they do that???

Note too that some of the pics already have the picture (at least in the crowd ones) and the picture disappears into the background.  To do that they had to pull the images from copies of the footage and use Aftereffects (or something) to motion track it to a frame of some kind in the persons hand during original shooting.
