How's you Algebra?

If your not busy do you want to try some questions? Easy at first. And if it get's too heavy I''ll hand over the thread. Anyone in? We'll start real easy. Something to do and keep your mind in shape.

Nope, no it's not. A+B is a non-algebraic partial statement. There are no references or equalities. Even A+B=10 is overly vague with too many variables. 2a+2b=10 is solvable, OTOH, with finite responses for A and B.

Okay let's play with Quadratic Equations:

x2 + 6x + 10 = 0

6x2 + 8x – 22 = 0

"Brian hits a baseball straight toward a 15 ft high fence that is 400 feet away from home plate. THe ball is hit when it is 2.5 feet from the ground and leaves the bat at an angle of 30 degrees with the horizontal. Find the initial velocity needed for the ball to clear the fence"

In algebra letters like a, b, c are generally used for constants, whereas x and y are most frequently used for variables. That's not set in stone but then again I do remember those questions like:

Train a leaves the station travelling East at 30 kilometers per hour while Train b is heading West travelling at 60 kilometers per hour. Sally is tied to the tracks 39 kilometers East of Train a and is 51 kilometers West of Train b. Train a left the station 3 minutes before Train b and its now 11:23. There are 137 kilometers of track between Train a and Train b. Sally is trying to get herself loose and has managed to start working one end of the rope through the knot end with her teeth. She needs to move 52 centimeters of rope to get it completely through the the knot end to release her. She is able to work about 3.78 centimeters per minute through the knot end. She began working the rope through at 11:26.

Then I would see the final question: What time did Jane arrive home on Train a from the dentist? (Please remember to show your work)

Tarzan can swing 6 inches for each foot of vine. Each vine is attached to the tree 50 feet from the floor of the jungle. Each 10 feet of vine costs 1 second of swing time. Jane is drowning in quicksand 100 meters from Tarzan's home tree. If the trees are spaced 4 meters apart what is the optimum vine length Tarzan can use to get to Jane before she drowns? Express your answer in furlongs. Show your work.

Okay. Let's go back a bit and let the rest of the class catch up.

So, again, what is the answer to A + B?

edit:// And Doc, We'll get to the physics questions later if you like. :)

Okay, let's skip ahead a little bit then. Obviously we have some bright students here.

We can start here.

Solve:

2x + y + z = 6
x - 2y + 2z = 10
3x - y - z = 4

and show your work.

And when you get done that I have something fun for you.
