How would you study AE?

Lets say that for some reason you had too start all over with After Effects, from zero. How would you study/start? Would you do anything different this time around?

Yes. I would start with CS3 instead of version 5. I used to do stabilization by hand!

Learning by doing is the best way.

I would agree but I always thought that it was important to get the basics down first, something like a Lynda Beg Tutorial or something, then to get the effects down do a little mini-exercise for each effect, for example make a movie type title with text animation only and use the Shine effect. I like study basics, study semi-specific action and then try to start creating on your own

I'm pretty proficient at AE and I just started with the Video CoPilot tutorials and Mark Christiansen's book Professional Studio Techniques.

It's an advanced book, but the VCP tutorials will take care of alot of basics. I was able to just jump into Mark's book with no problem.

I reccomend this and also creatvie cow.

Few more books I would look into are trish and chris meyer books!

seems like there's no better way than to actually learn by doing it and using tutorials from videocopilot and lynda.com as grounds for basics.

the rest is all creativity and that can't be taught in a book or internet website.

I started learning early this year. Just went through the tutorials in help, then downloaded a bunch of tutorials from Creative Cow and Video Copilot. It took just a few days (full time) to become proficient enough to use it on my own projects (complex motion-tracking + compositing).

Aaron Rabinowisk [sic] is also a great source. I taught myself how to do it simply by doing. Messing around with stuff until I knew how it worked. Then I found Aaron, and then CoPilot.
